Team Lead, Work Protection

Summary of Job Function

The Lead will have overall responsibility for the Work Protection Code (WPC), and is responsible for management, standardization, training, audit, and continual improvement initiatives for the program. Also, responsible for the Electrical Safety Program that includes high voltage switching, grounding & bonding, and participation on the Technical Advisory Committee for the provincial Power Lines Hazards program.

As a member of the Safety & Health department, the Lead, Work Protection leads incident investigations as required, or other initiatives aimed at improving the company's safety culture or the improvement and maintenance of the corporate Safety Management system. The Lead, Work Protection will support and foster a zero-harm mindset and align with NL Hydro's corporate policies, goals and guiding principles.

Responsibilities:

• Provides direction to NL Hydro personnel specific to Work Protection to ensure safety and health standards and processes are developed, communicated, and implemented.
• Assists with organizing, planning work activities, and maintaining work plans for the Corporate Work Protection Code Committee.
• Monitors Work Protection performance of NL Hydro operations and recommends improvement strategies.
• Provides technical direction, guidance and leadership to managers/supervisors as well as corporate/regional safety personnel on Work Protection and associated programs.
• Establishes and provides guidance to Corporate and Local Work Protection Code committees.
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of engineering codes and standards relating to Work Protection, Electrical Safety Program, Safe Work Practices & Procedures, Safety & Health standards, and ensures compliance with all pertinent legislative requirements.
• Leads or assists in the development of corporate level programs, processes, and strategies which promote an interdependent safety culture and support world class safety performance.
• Assists in general departmental duties including the development and maintenance of the Corporate Safety Management System while ensuring strategic alignment with NL Hydro's corporate policies, goals and guiding principles.
• Participates in technical committees related to utility/industry collaboration on public electrical safety and public electrical safety education.
• Leads or assists, as required, with the resolution of OHS issues with the regulator.
• Monitors regional and corporate level programs for compliance to Provincial OHS regulations.

Qualifications:

An undergraduate degree in science or engineering; or graduation from technical college with a technology related degree. Consideration will be given to other candidates that demonstrate equivalent qualifications through trades related experience, and includes a Tradesperson (electrical, mechanical, or powerline technicians) or Technologist (electrical, electronic, or mechanical preferred). A minimum of 10 years of working with Work Protection and related experience in the electrical utility field is required. Knowledge and experience in stations, generating plants, and line maintenance would be an asset. The successful candidate will be required to complete a certificate in OHS, if not otherwise completed.
