Administrative Assistants are members of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union, Local 53 (NSGEU). The NSGEU collective agreement can be accessed by clicking HERE .
The Administrative Assistant in the Programs and System Services Department for the Halifax Regional Centre for Education shall provide all required administrative and clerical support to the Administrative team within the Department. In addition, the Administrative Assistant must work in a team-based environment and display a high degree of professionalism & diplomacy in dealing with the general public, students and staff, volunteers and outside agencies. Consistent with Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and Halifax Regional Centre for Education policies, the Administrative Assistant will work within an established accountability framework to ensure maximum results are achieved in delivering administrative services to schools. The Administrative Assistant will demonstrate a strong commitment to the school improvement process in support of student learning and well-being, and will report directly to the Director of Programs & System Services or designate.
Qualifications:
(a) Recognized completion of a Secretarial/General Office Administration Program or equivalent obtained through relevant job experience;
(b) A minimum of two (2) years experience in an office environment utilizing advanced computer systems with proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and databases (specifically Microsoft Office, Google Docs/Google Drive).
Term: April 14 - June 30th, 2025 with a possibility of extension
Rate of Pay:
This is a 12-month per year NSGEU position on the SC4 scale with a starting hourly rate of $27.15.
Rates are based on a five (5) step scale with step increases occurring annually in accordance with the Collective Agreement as shown below.

Hours of Work:
Seven (7) hours per day (excluding lunch) totalling 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Administrative Assistants are entitled to an unpaid lunch break of at least one-half (1/2) hour and up to one (1) hour to be scheduled in consultation with the immediate supervisor.
In accordance with Article 21.03 (b) of the NSGEU Collective Agreement the start date of the position may vary from the date listed above should the successful applicant be a bargaining unit employee.
Vacation:
Administrative Assistants working a 12-month schedule are entitled to vacation days as needed to cover the Christmas and March Breaks (a minimum of 10 days) plus 2 additional days. Permanent employees receive an additional five (5) vacation days once they have achieved four (4) years and ten (10) years of employment.
