The primary purpose of this position is to work as an active member of the operating room team to provide a high standard of care to patients of Charles Curtis Memorial Hospital. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for maintaining professional and organizational standards and practice in accordance with the Labrador-Grenfell Health Model of Nursing Clinical Practice and reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager .

Qualifications:

  • Graduate from an approved program for Licensed Practical Nurses.
  • Practicing registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Operating Room Technician Certification or willingness to obtain by Distance Education/ LGH Perioperative course; 10 weeks of clinical in the Operating Room, CSCMH; Travel to St. John’s maybe required for 2 weeks of labs. Can also be completed at CMH. (2-year return in service commitment required);
  • Current in BLS.
  • Knowledge of the legal and ethical aspects of nursing in the assigned area.
  • Ability to cope and work under, at times, difficult and stressful conditions.
  • The successful applicant will be required to submit a satisfactory certificate of conduct.

Duties:

  • Works with the surgical team by setting up instrumentation, supplies and is familiarized with technique required for Surgical and Endoscopic procedures.
  • Assists in transporting Patients to the operating room and prepping the patient for surgery.
  • Monitors sterile and aseptic technique and ensures it is maintained by the surgical team.
  • Assists the Surgical team in gowning and gloving.
  • Counts, organizes and is aware of all items on the sterile field.
  • Collects and handles specimens according to operating room policy.
  • Safely dismantles surgical field post procedure.
  • Complies with ORNAC and CSA standards.
  • Reports and records occurrences and participate in quality assurance programs.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
