The Town of Shediac has set itself the goal of becoming a net-zero carbon community by 2035. To achieve this vision, the Net Zero Development & Innovation Lead, under the supervision of the Director of Economic Development and Tourism, will be responsible for leading and coordinating municipal initiatives to make the Town of Shediac an exemplary carbon neutral community.
This position involves strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, program coordination, and policy development.
Major Responsibilities
- Oversee the planning, execution, and continuous improvement of Shediac's Net Zero initiatives.
- Develop and manage a roadmap outlining short-term and long-term projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
- Collaborate with municipal departments, external partners, and community stakeholders to align Net Zero objectives with broader municipal goals.
- Identify potential funding sources and prepare grant applications or proposals in coordination with relevant agencies.
- Facilitate communication with residents, businesses, provincial agencies, utilities, and other stakeholders regarding the Net Zero project.
- Coordinate public outreach and education programs, promoting broad-based community involvement.
- Recommend municipal policies and regulations that support Net Zero objectives.
- Develop internal guidelines and procedures for implementing energy efficiency measures and sustainable practices.
- Track and evaluate progress on GHG emissions reductions, energy usage, and cost savings.
- Prepare periodic reports for the Town Council and external stakeholders to highlight achievements, lessons learned, and next steps.
- Work closely with consultants, partner organizations (e.g., SGIN, NB Power), and other municipal leaders to coordinate technical and financial aspects of Net Zero projects.
- Represent the Town of Shediac in regional or provincial committees related to sustainability and climate action.
- Guide municipal staff in incorporating sustainable practices into daily operations.
- Keep abreast of evolving technologies and trends in renewable energy, energy management, and climate adaptation.
Education (degree/diploma/certifications):
Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Engineering, Urban Planning, Public Administration, or a related field.
A master's degree in a relevant discipline is considered an asset.
Community Energy Manager Certification is an asset.
PMP, LEED, or other relevant certifications are also considered valuable.
Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in sustainability, energy management, project management, or a related area.
Knowledge/Skill/Ability:
- A genuine passion for ambitious environmental initiatives is essential for this role.
- Strong understanding of energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies, and GHG accounting.
- Proficiency in data analysis, project management tools, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Track record of successful community engagement and collaboration on environmental or energy projects.
- Experience in policy development, application writing, and budget management is desirable.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Collaborative mindset with a proven ability to work with diverse stakeholder groups.
- Problem-solving approach with the ability to adapt to evolving challenges.
- Organizational skills to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
- Must be fluent in spoken and written French and have a good knowledge of spoken and written English.
