Job Summary
This position works within the Nurse Practitioner's (NP) scope of practice in the following category of practice: (Adult or Family/All Ages). This is an advanced practice role providing professional, analytical and an autonomous comprehensive range of health services to patients including, but not limited to, health assessments and diagnosis diseases, disorders, injuries and conditions; treating and managing acute and chronic illnesses and identifying health risks and needs within a holistic model.

The NP Critical Care provides comprehensive patient care in collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary health team. This includes performing comprehensive health assessment based on a thorough history, physical examination, and additional assessment strategies individualized to patient needs and practice setting; utilizing critical appraisal skills in decisions related to the use of clinical and diagnostic investigations, interventions and the management of care; demonstrating evidence-based clinical decision-making through the critical examination and application of evidence from clinical research integrated with clinical expertise, patient input and existing resources; performing diagnostic procedures and therapeutics; coordinating activities and functions regarding patient care, progress and outcomes; exercising flexibility in clinical decision-making depending on need to negotiate with other healthcare provider(s) or determine a course of action in the absence of other resources or providers; and directs patient care to ensure continuity across the continuum.

The NP Critical Care clarifies relevant research questions, collaborates, initiates and disseminates research activities; provides leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based practice; and promotes the use of research to evaluate outcomes of care while acting as a leader, resource person, preceptor and mentor for nurses, students and other professionals. The incumbent must also be able to identify the need for change related to clinical, educational, or research issues in clinical practice and initiates appropriate action.

Job Demands
By applying for this job, you acknowledge an understanding that regular requirements and demands of this job include (but are not limited to):
Constantly moves, lifts, or operates equipment/machinery up to 10 lbs. and regularly is required to lift/move equipment, books and supplies. Occasionally, may have to reposition a patient over 50 lbs.
Physical effort also includes regular sitting to conduct patient histories, performing work on the computer and when assessing patients, regularly stands or walks.
When performing procedures, regularly uses fine finger/precision work and hand tools (i.e. medical instruments, computer mouse, stethoscope, dopplers, etc.) requiring accurate control and steadiness.
Visual concentration is required when performing physical assessment and procedures, completing charts/reports, observing patients, reading equipment/monitors, and completing work-related correspondence on the computer.

Job Qualifications
Completion of an approved/recognized Nurse Practitioner program is required.
Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of NL and Licensed (or eligible for licensure) as a Nurse Practitioner (Adult or Family/All Ages) with the CRNNL.
A minimum of five years clinical experience within the last seven in Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery or Critical Care is required.

Current BCLS Certification is required
Certification in ACLS is required.
Possessed strong abilities in the areas of collaboration, clinical reasoning, professional development, interpersonal effectiveness, conflict management and teamwork.
Demonstrated progressive clinical leadership skills.
Possessed strong communication, problem solving, decision-making, and teaching skills.
Demonstrated ability to function autonomously in an advanced practice role.
Support and participate in research to improve practice and client outcomes.
Demonstrated skills in computer and database management skills
Ability to function independently in an advanced practice role.
The Canadian Nurses Association Certification in Critical Care is an asset.
Demonstrated interpersonal, leadership, organizational and problem-solving skills.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required.
