The Opportunity

We currently have an exceptional career opportunity for a Senior Tax Litigation Associate. EY's global alliance of independent law firms collaborates with our offices worldwide to provide our clients with integrated, high-quality service. Our award-winning tax planning, counsel, and litigation teams offer a powerful combination of legal knowledge, experience, and national presence to help organizations successfully navigate the complexities of Canada's tax laws. Our team has been ranked among Canada's best, with several of our lawyers recognized as leading practitioners and authorities in various areas of tax law, tax litigation, customs and excise, and international trade law.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor junior associates in responding to federal and provincial audits, strategically advising clients on various options and steps in resolving complex tax disputes.
  • Prepare and oversee the drafting of notices of objection and written representations to federal and provincial tax authorities.
  • Manage litigation efforts in resolving tax disputes, including court appeals, judicial review applications, and other administrative processes such as voluntary disclosures, taxpayer relief applications, ruling requests, and remission orders.
  • Provide expert legal opinions regarding the tax consequences of transactions and conduct post-transaction audits for tax efficacy and litigation risk.
  • Develop and implement strategies for client acquisition and relationship management, contributing to the growth of the practice.

To Qualify for the Role You Must Have

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in income tax, sales tax, and other tax areas, with a strong focus on tax litigation.
  • Proven track record in managing complex tax litigation cases and a deep understanding of Canada's income tax, sales tax, and other Canadian tax issues.
  • Ability to work in group and possess a business mindset.
  • A member in good standing of the Barreau du Quebec.
  • Completed or in the process of completing a master's degree in taxation from a recognized Canadian University or the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Program would be an asset.
  • This role involves interaction with clients operating nationally and globally where fluency in French and English is required. Bilingualism in both French and English is therefore a requirement of this role. While based in Montreal, this position will interact with external and internal stakeholders both within and outside of Canada. French and English bilingualism is therefore a requirement.
