Job Description

CUSTOMER

  • Drafts legal documents and instruments, based on legal research and knowledge of law and legal procedures

  • Interacts with internal/external stakeholders regarding a variety of legal matters

  • Handles independently initial screening of incoming legal communications and correspondence

  • Manages maintenance of files and applicable databases

  • Assists with advice on legal process, researching and responding to legal questions as necessary

  • Assists with management of expenditures on outside counsel in accordance with policies and procedures

  • Deals directly with clients and/or external counsel to assist in gathering and providing appropriate information and documentation

  • May assist in the preparation and maintenance of corporate records

  • Researches appropriate laws, judicial decisions, legal activities and other materials that are relevant to assigned cases

  • Participates in special projects as required

SHAREHOLDER

  • Contributes to various operational activities and processes as assigned

  • Consistently exercises discretion in managing, information and matters of confidentiality

  • Remains knowledgeable of practices and procedures within own area of responsibility and keeps abreast of emerging trends for own functional area

  • Protects the interests of the organization – identifies and manages risks, and escalates non-standard, high risk activities as necessary

  • Conducts internal and external research projects; supports the development / delivery of presentations / communications to management or broader audience

  • Conducts reporting and / or meaningful analysis at the functional or enterprise level using results to draw conclusions, make recommendations, assess the effectiveness of programs/ policies/ practices under the direction of management

  • Maintains a culture of risk management and control, supported by effective processes in alignment with risk appetite

  • Participates fully as a member of the team, support a positive work environment that promotes service to the business, quality, innovation and teamwork and ensure timely communication of issues/ points of interest

BREADTH & DEPTH

  • Experienced working professional role providing specialized business services, advisory or processes / program support within their own area of speciality

  • Requires experienced, conceptual and practical knowledge within their own specialty and knowledge of broader related areas

  • Accountable for own work and sometimes others; acts as an escalation point or knowledge resource for others in their own area

  • Works within broad guidelines / policies and independently performs tasks from end to end

  • Solves moderately complex problems by taking a new perspective on existing solutions

  • Exercises judgment based on the analysis of multiple sources of information

  • Conveys business context when providing guidance within field of specialty to internal or external stakeholders

  • Work performed under minimal management guidance and supervision

  • Identify and lead problem resolution

  • Generally reports to Legal Counsel or above

Job Requirements

  • Completed Paralegal program at recognized College

  • Currently a licensed Paralegal by Law Society Ontario

  • Minimum 5 years actual LAT experience

  • Experience mentoring/managing/overseeing paralegals and junior lawyers on LAT files
