THE POSITION:
Events East Group is now inviting applications for the position of Security Guard with our Security team.
Reporting to the Manager, Security Services, the Security Guard is responsible for ensuring facility spaces are safe and accessible at the Halifax Convention Centre, Scotiabank Centre, and the Events East Offices. At the Halifax Convention Centre, the Security Guard administers the security access control platform (Kantech), taking direct responsibility for on-site camera monitoring and event-related requirements such as facility and door access control, pass card management, elevator pre-programming and in-the-moment requests. At the Scotiabank Centre, the Security Guard is responsible for monitoring cameras at both facilities, administering the access control system (Kantech) remotely, managing the Intrusion Detection and Fire Systems (Simplex), and managing access control for staff, partners, and event-related traffic.
Security Guards are required to perform regular facility inspections, respond to calls for deployment, and support medical and emergency procedures.
This position will operate in the Halifax Convention Center, Scotiabank Centre, and Events East Group offices.
THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operations:
- Directly administer and manage security access control platform (Kantech):
- Control access to facility meeting room doors as well as service corridors and stairwells, including pre-programming based on event requirements (Momentus).
- Pre-program passenger elevator requirements on a case-by-case basis; managing on-site changes and requests.
- Monitor cameras for event and facility concerns, threats, or other situations.
- Actively monitor Active Threat System (ATS); manually activating the system as required.
- Manage Intrusion Detection and Fire System at Scotiabank Centre (Simplex).
- Perform regular facility inspections including front-of-house spaces, back-of-house spaces, emergency exit routes, and limited exterior areas, noting and - where possible mitigating - safety, security, or property risks. Escalate concerns as necessary.
- Support Incident Command System (CACF platform operation during fire alarms, personnel and guest evacuations, medical emergency responses, etc.) in accordance with Events East policies, procedures, and SDS's.
- Answer incoming calls to Security Operations Centre, including facility emergency phones.
- Respond swiftly to calls for deployment or other support calls from front-of-house staff.
- Investigate alarm trips (e.g.: fire alarm activation points, one-off activation of a Nightlock, etc.) as required.
- Support facility policies and procedures during move-in and move-out's (e.g.: enforcement of non-use of passenger elevators, escalators, or Argyle Entrance).
- Review event programming regularly for changes; manage work orders including updating actuals and closing orders.
- Maintain positive working relationships with official security partner staff.
- Act as a positive role model for all staff members in job performance, work ethic, and disposition.
- Foster positive relationships with all teams, championing organizational values and recognizing colleagues who demonstrate supporting behaviors.
- Actively, constructively participate in meetings, projects, and working groups as assigned and directed.
- Participate actively in all training and development initiatives.
- Support adoption of new technologies and technical skills as they are introduced to the department.
- Accept constructive performance feedback and coaching; independently apply self-improvement actions as appropriate.
- Other duties as required.
Administration:
- Adhere to all Events East Group policies, procedures, and guidelines
- Complete a shift report for each scheduled shift.
- Complete or gather all applicable documents (key sign-outs, event staff sign-ins, etc.).
- Manage the respective security office e-mails.
- Act decisively in challenging or stressful situations; problem-solving in the moment.
- Report any faulty or defective equipment or system to the Manager, Security Services.
- Report any supply shortage or deficiency to the Manager, Security Services.
- Report any facility or infrastructure damage or deficiency to Manager, Security Services and the respective Property Services Building Manager.
Health & Safety:
- Report all safety hazards to the direct supervisor as soon as is reasonably possible. Take action to correct the safety hazard if possible and reasonable.
- Report all incidents and near misses to the direct supervisor as soon as is reasonably possible. Participate actively in the Near Miss and Incident Investigation process.
- Create, promote, and follow all departmental standards and guidelines, job procedures, and equipment operation protocols to continuously ensure the safety of oneself, team members, and clients.
- Wear, use, and ensure the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required, report any issues or violations within the team or onsite to the Manager, Security Services.
- Report any damaged PPE to the direct supervisor, promptly.
- Achieve and maintain first aid certification at SFA CPR C level.
- Take a lead role in facility response to fire alarms and medical emergencies during non-critical times.
- Identify and mitigate any event-related health and safety concerns, both property-related and security-related, protecting Events East Group against losses, penalties, damages, settlements, or other expenses or liabilities.
- Provide medical first responder support to clients, guests, and staff with particular emphasis on "Code M" calls.
- Be a subject matter expert in Events East emergency response protocols, procedures, and service delivery standards.
- Resolutely support the Joint Operational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC) in all its endeavors and promote health and safety initiatives by reinforcing organizational culture.

THE PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience:
- Completion of high school or equivalent secondary school.
- Post-secondary education preferred.
- 1 year experience in a relevant, security-related role.
Physical Demands:
Ability to work flexible hours with shifts that can be up to 12 hours in length and occur during mornings, days, evenings and backshifts, weekends, and holidays
- Frequent to occasional sitting, standing, and walking.
- Minimal to occasional climbing, bending, stooping/crouching/squatting, twisting, reaching, or balancing.
- Frequent to occasional neck movements, grasping and handling, finger movements.
- Minimal lifting or carrying up to 20 lbs., pushing or pulling up to 10 lbs.
- Other physical demands as required.
