As Executive Director, you will play a pivotal role in leading CAN-U's operations, programs, and partnerships to support adults on their educational journeys. Working under the direction of the Board of Directors and in collaboration with staff, learners, and community partners, you will ensure the delivery of impactful and accessible programs in a supportive and innovative environment.
Position Details
Position Title: Executive Director
Hours: 75 hours / 2 weeks
Wages: $32.57 - $36.63 / hour (negotiable based on experience)
Location: Amherst with the possibility of travel within Cumberland County

Position Tasks
- Provide supervision, guidance, and ongoing support for staff and learners.
- Oversee daily operations, including checking emails and phone messages and ensuring timely responses.
- Manage accounting tasks, including payroll, accounts payable/receivables, government remittances, and monthly financial reports in collaboration with legal signing officers.
- Prepare, submit, and manage funding proposals, grant applications, and interim/final reports.
- Ensure adherence to program delivery guidelines and compliance with reporting requirements.
- Promote and coordinate professional development opportunities for staff.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and healthy workplace environment.
- Support learners by providing options to address individual barriers and empowering them to meet personal goals.
- Foster strong organizational communication and teamwork among staff and board members.
- Organize and oversee adult literacy activities and community events.
- Build and sustain partnerships with local community organizations to enhance program opportunities.
- Actively participate in community networks and initiatives that align with CAN-U's mission.
- Collect and maintain statistical information relevant to program delivery and reporting.
- Foster independence among staff and learners to encourage problem-solving and self-sufficiency.
- Maintain an enthusiastic and motivational approach to learning and organizational progress.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Community Development, Education, Social Work, or related field, and/or a minimum of 3-5 years of progressive management experience in the non-profit sector or adult education programs will be considered an asset. Equivalent combinations of education and extensive relevant experience will also be considered.
- Strong experience in preparing and writing funding proposals, grant applications, and reports.
- Financial experience, including managing budgets, payroll, and fund allocation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse groups of stakeholders.
- Familiarity with principles of adult education, literacy programs, or non-profit service delivery.
- Ability to foster collaboration and teamwork among staff, learners, and community partners.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to support staff and learners in overcoming challenges.
- Demonstrated ability to build and sustain partnerships with community organizations.
- Experience in promoting events, literacy programs, and educational initiatives.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize effectively.
- Enthusiasm for lifelong learning and commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive environment.
- Familiarity with grant funding processes and the ability to ensure compliance with funder requirements.
- Proficiency in maintaining statistical data and preparing detailed reports for board members and funders.
- Capacity to inspire and empower adult learners to achieve their personal and educational goals.
