About Torbay

The beautiful Town of Torbay is a vibrant community with over 7,899 residents on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador. Torbay is home to over 150 businesses, three schools, and numerous community groups. Situated right on the Atlantic Ocean, Torbay offers breathtaking views in a scenic, rural setting. Conveniently bordering the capital City of St. John's, all urban amenities, including major retail centers and an international airport, are within a few minutes' drive.

The Position

The Town of Torbay is presently recruiting an Inclusion Attendant, who will play a crucial role in ensuring that individuals with diverse abilities have equal access to and participation in various activities and programs. Your primary responsibility will be to support and assist individuals with disabilities, ensuring they feel included, valued, and supported within the community or organization. The Inclusion Attendant will work under the direction of the Inclusion Coordinator.

Education

  • A minimum of one (1) year post-secondary education in a field related to children and youth (i.e., Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, Physical Education, Education, Early Childhood Education, Special Education, Social Work, Nursing, or Occupational Therapy);
  • ABA therapist training and/or experience working as a respite worker or with a homecare agency would be an asset.
  • Crisis Intervention Course would also be an asset.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Individuals: Provide personalized support to individuals with disabilities to help them participate fully in activities and programs.
  • Accommodation Assistance: Work closely with program organizers or supervisors to ensure that appropriate accommodations are made to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities.
  • Personal Care Support: Assist individuals with personal care tasks, if required, while respecting their dignity and independence.
  • Communication Support: Facilitate effective communication between individuals with disabilities and other participants or staff members as needed.
  • Behavior Management: Implement strategies to manage challenging behaviors and ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Adaptation of Activities: Modify activities or materials to make them accessible and inclusive for individuals with diverse abilities.
  • Emotional Support: Provide emotional support and encouragement to individuals with disabilities to foster their confidence and self-esteem.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with other staff members, volunteers, and external organizations to promote inclusivity and accessibility in all aspects of the organization or community.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of support provided, individual progress, and any incidents or concerns that arise during activities or programs.
  • Training and Development: Participate in training sessions and workshops to enhance your knowledge and skills in supporting individuals with disabilities effectively.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience: Prior experience working with individuals with disabilities is preferred. Experience in a similar role or in a related field such as education, social work, or healthcare can be advantageous.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for building positive relationships with individuals with disabilities, their families, and other stakeholders.
  • Empathy and Patience: Demonstrated empathy, patience, and understanding towards individuals with diverse abilities are critical for providing effective support.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to think creatively and adapt quickly to address the unique needs and challenges of individuals with disabilities.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team of staff members, volunteers, and external partners to promote inclusion and accessibility.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to accommodate the needs of participants and programs.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to perform tasks that may involve standing, bending, lifting, and assisting individuals with mobility challenges.
  • Must be able to provide an updated RNC Certificate of Conduct, including a vulnerable sector check.
  • Must hold a valid certification in Standard First Aid CPR Level C with AED
  • High Five® Principles of Healthy Child Development.
  • Candidates possessing an equivalent combination of education and experience that is deemed acceptable by the Town may be considered.
