The Program in Linguistics at Saint Mary's University invites applications for a 9-month Limited Term Appointment (including 4 weeks for preparation) at the rank of Assistant Professor, to commence 1 August 2025. This is a contractually limited-term position, as described in 10.1.10(c) of the Collective Agreement between the University and the Faculty Union.

Job Information and Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to teach a standard load of 2.5 full course equivalents (FCE) at the undergraduate level, as outlined below. Upon mutual agreement with the Program Coordinator and an honours student, they may also supervise an undergraduate honours thesis in Linguistics; this additional work would be recognized with an honorarium in accordance with 16.5.1(c) of the Collective Agreement. The successful candidate will also be expected to hold regular office hours, to engage in scholarship, and generally to be an active member of the Linguistics Program and of Saint Mary's University.

Experience and Education Requirements

The ideal candidate will have completed a Ph.D. in linguistics or a very closely related field and will have a demonstrated ability to teach linguistics effectively at the undergraduate level, particularly in areas relevant to the courses listed below. Applications will also be considered from candidates who are ABD and close to completing a Ph.D. in linguistics, if they have relevant teaching experience. Candidates should also have a record of scholarship in linguistics or a closely related field. Applications from candidates who can contribute to the Indigenization and/or decolonization of the University and its curriculum are particularly welcome.

Courses

The successful candidate will teach a standard load of 2.5 FCE, including the following four courses:

  • LING 1200 - Introduction to Linguistics (1.0 FCE; fall 2025 and winter 2026; TR 11:30- 12:45 p.m.)
  • LING 2309 - Phonetics (0.5 FCE; fall 2025; TR 4:00-5:15 p.m.)
  • LING 2310 - Sound Patterns in Language I (0.5 FCE; winter 2026; MW 2:30-3:45 p.m.
  • LING 4510 - Topics in Applied Linguistics (0.5 FCE; winter 2026; TR 2:30-3:45 p.m.)

The specific topic for LING 4510 has not yet been set. Candidates are encouraged to include in their application a brief proposal for a topic.
