Hibernia and Hebron Research & Development Initiative

Research Initiatives and Services (RIS)

(Contractual Position to March 31, 2027; Possibility of Extension)

OVERVIEW

The Hibernia and Hebron R&D initiative encompasses a new portfolio of projects in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Additive Manufacturing, Sustainability, and Subsurface Prediction and is administered by Research Initiatives & Services (RIS). Two of these projects are 1) Membrane Separation of CO2, and 2) Hyperspectral Imagery and Modelling of Carbonate Cementation. The membrane separation project aims to develop membrane systems that can preferentially separate CO2 from a complex gas mixture. This has applications in exhaust emissions as well as direct-air-capture. The hyperspectral project aims to characterize the distribution and genesis of problematic carbonate cements in reservoirs offshore Newfoundland as a way to de-risk CO2 storage in the region and develop new workflows for commercial Hyperspectral applications in reservoir geology.

The project manager will help ensure that the projects meet projected milestones in a timely manner within the allocated budget, and that internal and external reporting requirements are met. To do so, the successful applicant will work closely with the Co-Investigators and project team, RIS, Technical Services, Facilities Management and other support units, Energy Research & Innovation (ERI), the project Advisory Committee, industry partners and vendors.

DUTIES

Working directly with the Principal Investigators (PIs) and the Associate Director, Hibernia and Hebron R&D initiative, the successful applicant will help ensure that the projects are executed on time and on budget. Duties include facilitating the purchase of several pieces of equipment; ensuring that the labs are prepared to receive the equipment, and that the equipment is fully operational; effective coordination and use of project resources to ensure project deadlines and commitments are met to the satisfaction of Energy Research & Innovation, internal and external stakeholders; applying and following best practices and policies employed by the University; ensuring team members are engaged throughout the duration of the project; coordinating and tracking the project plan implementation and activity schedule to meet milestones and completion deadlines; helping to ensure the projects are completed on time and on budget; identifying project risks and implementing mitigation strategies following consultation with the PIs, RIS staff, and/or the Advisory Committee as appropriate; budgeting and monitoring project expenditures against budget; maintaining effective communications with RIS, ERI and all partners; coordinating reports and budget updates to various stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience (2-3 years) in project management or coordination, including budgeting and monitoring expenses against budget, preferably in a university or industrial R&D environment; experience in selection, procurement, installation, and maintenance of scientific equipment; completion of a Master's degree in a related Science or Engineering discipline; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including verbal and written communication, and the ability to prioritize work are essential, as is laboratory experience. Experience setting up or managing a research laboratory, working with experience in the oil and gas industry, and/or collaborative working with funding agencies and partner organizations would be assets.
