Office of Research Services

The Office of Research Services (ORS), under the umbrella of the Office of the Vice-President (Research) and under the direction of the Executive Director, provides both pre-award and post-award support services to faculty members, researchers and external partners, as well as making connections with new partners including funding agencies, industry and external partners and research organizations. ORS supports faculty members and researchers on both campuses at all stages of the research including funding, managing intellectual property (IP) & agreements, technology and knowledge transfer, research security, commercialization and legal advice.

Salary Range: $51,391 - $66,814 per annum

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Associate Director, Grants & Awards, the Indigenous Engagement Advisor is responsible for connecting with Indigenous communities to discuss and advise on research with, by and for Indigenous communities. The position would support the Piluwitahasuwin in advancing institutional change. In the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation, UNB is committed to advancing reconciliation and decolonization in ways which emphasize reciprocity, responsibility, and respect.

  • Advance Indigenous community engagement, specifically for First Nations communities for the purpose of strengthening relationships and exploring research-related partnerships and other opportunities.
  • Collaborate and build partnerships with Faculties / Departments and other units across the university.
  • Manage internal and external stakeholder relationships that includes managing expectations, instilling trust, negotiating, and resolving conflict.
  • Work with the Research & Innovation Partnerships group on partnership development.
  • Assist faculty in stewarding research collaborations with Indigenous communities.
  • Build relationships with Indigenous research support teams and professionals across Canada.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of the literature and the legislative requirements of Indigenous research frameworks and best practices.
  • Lead outreach, education, and awareness related to Indigenous ways of knowing.
  • Promote a culture of inclusion and Indigenization within the research enterprise.
  • Identify and advocate for the removal of structural and systemic barriers experienced by Indigenous researchers within the research ecosystem.
  • Provide advice to the Vice-President (Research) and other senior administration, as well as to the university community.
  • Develop and implement plans to help researchers work with and alongside Indigenous individuals and communities.
  • Develop new initiatives, events, training, and communications to improve the implementation of Indigenous research principles within ORS and the Office of the Vice-President Research (OVPR).
  • Work collaboratively with ORS staff in relation to Indigenization of research services.
  • Assist in relation to grant applications by reviewing applicable sections, and to Indigenizing agreements with researchers and Indigenous communities by reviewing applicable sections; and
  • Identify funding opportunities related to Indigenous research.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • This position is designated for those that have Indigenous ancestry.
  • An undergraduate degree from a recognized university or college.
  • Five years of relevant experience.
  • Strong understanding of Wabanaki world views, culture, and values with strong relationships with communities.
  • Experience in respectfully engaging with and/or working with and alongside Indigenous people, communities and/or organizations

Additional Strengths

  • Experience in a role related to the implementation of reconciliation, Indigenization, and decolonization initiatives would be an asset.
  • Experience in research administration or related experience in a post-secondary environment would be an asset.
  • Experience with research and project coordination in Indigenous communities would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous research ethics would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated skills in mediation and facilitation along with strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills and comprehensive understanding and experience navigating complex and competing priorities.
  • Resourcefulness and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Tact, sensitivity and diplomacy, and well-developed interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in a variety of computer software applications including word processing, spreadsheet management and database management; and
  • Knowledge of the TRC Calls to Action as they pertain to research and post-secondary education would be an asset.
