Position Title: Outreach Worker
Program: Nignen Women's Shelter
Term: One year with possibility of extension
Salary: Commensurate with education and work experience
Hours of Work: Monday-Friday (75 bi-weekly) hours may vary
Anticipated start date: March 3, 2025

The Outreach Worker at Nignen plays a crucial role in supporting Indigenous women affected by intimate partner violence, both within the shelter and in the community. This position is responsible for providing culturally responsive, trauma-informed support, advocacy, and education to women and families experiencing or at risk of intimate partner violence. The Outreach Worker will work collaboratively with community partners, Indigenous leaders, and support networks to ensure accessible, holistic, and culturally rooted services.

The ideal candidate for this role is empathetic and compassionate. They are a confident decision-maker with the ability to build trust and resolve conflict. A solid understanding of First Nations history and culture is essential. Lived experience related to the position is a definite asset. Female applicants of indigenous ancestry preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct risk assessments and safety planning.
  • Raise awareness about intimate partner violence.
  • Collaborate with community organizations, service providers, peacekeepers and law enforcement to ensure a coordinated response to domestic violence.
  • Offer trauma-informed emotional support.
  • Organize and facilitate workshops, talking circles, and community education programs that integrate Indigenous views and healing modalities.
  • Support women in navigating social services, legal systems, and child welfare processes while advocating for their rights.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential case records, reports, and documentation in accordance with Nignen policies.
  • Represent Nignen in community meetings, coalitions, and partnerships to strengthen support networks for Indigenous women.
  • Participate in staff training and development focused on trauma-informed care and Indigenous cultural competency.
  • Travel throughout New Brunswick for training, networking opportunities, and community outreach efforts.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Post secondary education in social sciences such as human service worker, social service community worker (an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered)
  • High level of professionalism and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint and strong facilitation skills
  • Experience working within First Nation communities and knowledge of culture and traditions
  • Demonstrated understanding of the barriers, challenges, and the dynamics of violence against women, children and the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community
  • Must be trained or willing to obtain training in CPR/ First Aid, and Non-violent crisis intervention
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with the community, staff, and partner agencies
  • Demonstrated commitment to strict client confidentiality
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position
  • Ability to speak the Mi'kmaq language is an asset
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends to meet organizational needs
  • Successful Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector Checks
  • Proven ability to work within a team environment with respect to professionalism, cooperation, sensitivity and cultural awareness
