Our client, Phillips Foods, is a family-owned business founded in 1914 and recognized as a leading importer and distributor of crab meat in the United States. Best known for their premium-quality blue swimming crab meat and famous Maryland-style crab cakes, Phillips Foods also produces a full line of seafood appetizers, seafood cakes, fish, soups and entrées for foodservice and retail. They have recently acquired the Pêcheries Bas-Caraquet Fisheries facility in Bas-Caraquet, New Brunswick as they gear up for expansion into North Atlantic seafood. The Bas-Caraquet facility will enable a significant expansion of the Phillips product portfolio, with frozen and pasteurized snow crab & lobster, along with a growing range of newly developed value-added products.

We are excited to partner with the company as we look for a Plant Accounting Manager to join their team and play a key role in their growth based out of their Bas-Caraquet location!

The Accounting Manager will report directly to the VP Finance Canada and will work closely with the accounting staff at the Cap Pele head office. The Accounting Manager will be responsible for overseeing financial activities of the plant, including inventory control, management reporting, and ensuring compliance with regulations and company policy. The successful candidate will be someone who can demonstrate confidence and resilience in challenging situations while standing firm in supporting established practices.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Evaluate, and recommend improvements to the accounting functions at the plant.
  • Assist in the development of Standard Operating Procedures and internal controls related to the accounting functions at the plant.
  • Ensure internal control policies and procedures are implemented and maintained.
  • Collect, and analyze daily receiving, production, shipping and inventory data from receiving through finished product.
  • Assist with catch and health certificates and other documents required for shipments.
  • Prepare and submit daily production report and other cost-benefit analyses to the Cap Pele accounting office and Senior Management.
  • Identify and report on trends that are critical to the organization's financial performance.
  • Manage packaging and supply inventory levels, re-order points, and monthly counts.
  • Submit purchase quotes for approval and prepare and submit purchase orders.
  • Process payroll
  • Manage WCB reporting and claims.
  • Assist with Foreign Worker activities.
  • Review and submit for approval all employee expense claims.
  • Maintain and report monthly on updates to Cap Ex and other budgets.
  • Manage reporting to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans for direct buys of crab or lobster.
  • Assist plant management in co-ordination of compliance activities and inspection audits.
  • Other related duties as required.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field of study.
  • 5+ years experience working in a fast-paced organization, ideally in the seafood or food industry.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple and competing deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with a focus on advanced Excel, and Teams.
  • Experience using Microsoft Dynamics GP or comparative ERP accounting software
  • Bilingual in French and English is required.
