Job Summary
The Nursing Instructor II, reporting to the Primary Health Care Program Manager - Rural, plays a vital role in advancing the Primary Health Care (PHC) program within the zone. This involves facilitating inter-professional team development, fostering inter-sectoral collaboration, managing change processes, and building community capacity. As the PHC program expands rapidly, the Nursing Instructor II is tasked with understanding patient needs across various populations and designing tailored educational programs for the entire inter-professional team, utilizing expertise in adult learning principles and essential education functions such as needs analysis, program design, development, evaluation, and consultation.

Within PHC, the nurse instructor's responsibilities encompass multifaceted roles, including curriculum design and updating to meet current standards, education delivery, and clinical instruction. Additionally, the nurse instructor provides mentorship to new nurses joining the PHC program, guiding them in understanding patient needs and supporting them in crafting educational programs for the population. Other duties include collaborating with healthcare professionals from diverse disciplines, promoting inter-professional teamwork, and participating in community outreach.

In the role of a nurse instructor, responsibilities extend to drafting clear policies, organizing professional development sessions, facilitating orientations, and actively engaging community stakeholders. A commitment to continuous professional development is essential, along with familiarity with core PHC principles such as the Health Home Model of Care, Family Care Team Framework, trauma-informed care, culturally sensitive care, and harm reduction practices and principles.

Collaborating closely with Clinical Leads of inter-professional teams, the successful candidate considers the learning needs of the entire team while applying advanced clinical and educational knowledge for orientation and specialized education in primary health care. They will work independently as expert learning resources, contributing to patient care quality through research-based practice and continuous improvement. Additionally, they will standardize PHC policies based on national recommendations and evidence-based practices.

The preferred candidate will demonstrate an understanding of primary care nursing and proficiency in research, identifying research opportunities, and actively participating in research proposal formulation and funding applications where appropriate. Furthermore, they will serve as the clinical expert in the electronic medical record used by PHC, presently MedAccess EMR, and will require familiarity with all documentation systems used by the health authority.

Job Demands

Occasionally moving or lifting objects between 1- 5 lbs. such as pens, paper, file folders, or boxes.
Regularly sits to perform computer related duties requiring fine finger/precision (i.e. research, policy and course development), while standing and walking are required to perform nursing education work in classroom, laboratory and clinical settings.
Visual and hearing concentration is required to observe or consult with staff, to work on documents or to listen to staff on the telephone or in person.

Job Qualifications
Graduation from an approved/recognized post-secondary nursing education program with a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required.
A current practicing license with the College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (CRNNL).
A minimum of five (5) years of experience within the last seven (7) in primary care or community services is required.
Experience in facilitating adult learning and teaching principles, preferably with a focus on the operation of inter-professional teams is an asset.
Experience in obtaining consensus through facilitating diverse groups.
Experience coordinating programs or services with multiple stakeholders including external partners.
Demonstrated knowledge of instructional development, delivery and evaluation and demonstrated clinical expertise.
Demonstrated ability to provide strong and comprehensive clinical support, training and mentorship to inter-professional teams.
Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills as demonstrated by presentations, facilitations and report-writing.
Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and able to work both collaboratively and with a high degree of independence and initiative.
Demonstrated effective time-management skills and the ability to prioritize.
Strong clinical knowledge and comprehensive medical background.
Proven skills in the areas of leadership, interpersonal relationships, teamwork, personal time management, critical thinking, problem solving, innovation and creativity, mentoring, program design, development and evaluation; Strong oral and written communication skills.
Must be self-directed, demonstrating initiative and ability to work with a high degree of independence.
Education skills and experience must be consistent with adult learning principles.
Proficient with computer programs such as Microsoft Office and Teams, as well as MedAccess EMR.
Possession of a valid Newfoundland and Labrador Class 5 Driver's License and access to a private vehicle.
A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.
