Job Title: Therapeutic Recreation Assistant

Job Description: You will be responsible for assisting in the development, organization and delivery of therapeutic recreation programs and interventions that enhance the health, functional abilities, independence and quality of life of the residents.

Education Required:

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree with concentration in Therapeutic Recreation from an accredited institution
  • Standard First Aid or willingness to obtain
  • Education in responsive behaviors/Alzheimer's and related dementias course an asset
  • Computer literate (familiar with internet, Microsoft office products)
  • Knowledge and/or skills in music, creative expression and/or crafts an asset
  • Current Food Handlers or willingness to obtain
  • Current registration with the Nova Scotia Therapeutic Recreation Association

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with assessment of residents and development of goal orientated care plan to meet needs of residents
  • Work with the OT, PT and RA as well as other disciplines to develop programs
  • Assist the Chaplain and local area ministers to ensure spiritual needs of residents are being met
  • Documenting care
  • Provide direction and assisting in supervision of volunteers and student when needed
  • Maintain daily attendance records for programs
  • Encourage participation in programs
  • Provide support and assistance to residents and their families as needed
  • Assist in fundraising activities
  • Attend and participate in meetings when needed

Competencies:

  • Minimum 1 year experience within the recreation field
  • Experience in Long Term Care an asset
  • Experience working with volunteers and/or mentoring students an asset
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required for resident or department needs (days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays included)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for both written and verbal in English with residents, families and co-workers
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy in all aspects of the organization
  • Possesses exemplary Customer Service skills
  • Reliable with good attendance and cheerful disposition
  • Respectful and hardworking team player
  • Demonstrate the use of proper body mechanics
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary environment
  • Criminal Record Check including the Vulnerable Sector Screening in the last 3 months is required
