Job Summary
NL Health Services are seeking a Radiochemist I to support the clinical work of the Radiopharmaceutical Sciences. Reporting to the Manager of Radiopharmaceutical Sciences and Cyclotron Operations, the Radiochemist I works directly with a team of healthcare professionals within the Nuclear and Molecular Medicine program. The Nuclear and Molecular Medicine facility is equipped with an IBA 18/18 cyclotron to support Single Photon Radiopharmaceutical (SPR) and the Positron Emitting Radiopharmaceutical (PER) production, as well as a cold chemistry laboratory and, in the future, an animal imaging laboratory.
The Radiochemist prepares and tests Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliant radiopharmaceuticals, coordinates the production of the required quantity of radioisotopes from the cyclotron, performs and coordinates the production of radiopharmaceuticals using automated synthesis modules, and, performs the quality control tests based on approved procedures and protocols. The Radiochemist troubleshoots and resolves technical equipment problems as necessary to maintain daily radiopharmaceutical productions.
The Radiochemist assists with the review of standard operating procedures and other documentation as part of the regular maintenance of the quality assurance program. The Radiochemist also provides orientation to new production staff and as such the radiochemist must be proficient in performing all manufacturing, quality control, and environmental monitoring activities.
The Radiochemist will also be required to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders and lead process improvements within the department.
The Radiochemist must ensure that all activities are carried out by following established Quality Assurance/Quality Control procedures, applicable environmental and safety regulations, and other requirements as necessary.

• Prepare radiopharmaceuticals following established procedures and GMPs. Coordinate the production of the required quantity of radioisotopes from the cyclotron depending on workload.
• Perform QC measurements using various analytical chemistry techniques and equipment.
• Prepare various reagents used in the synthesis and QC of radiopharmaceuticals.
• Maintain raw material and consumable inventories as needed for daily radiopharmaceutical production.
• Perform routine maintenance as needed on related equipment such as the automated synthesis modules, Gas Chromatograph(s), HPLC systems, TLC scanner(s), and other similar equipment.
• Complete all required documentation and records to meet the requirements of current GMP guidelines and in compliance with Good Documentation Practices.
• Regularly moves or lifts objects between 10-50+ lbs. such as shielded radioactive sources and lead bricks.
This position presents a high responsibility to protect self and others from radiation exposure.
• Constantly sits to perform paper/computer work and operation of remote equipment; regularly walks or stands to perform radiopharmaceutical production, cyclotron, and equipment maintenance.
• Regularly performs fine finger/precision computer work; handling of open-source radioactivity and radioactive equipment/components requiring steadiness and accurate movement/control.
• Regularly works in confined/awkward spaces where reaching, bending, and crouching are required to complete maintenance work.
• Time sensitive work to meet clinical and research demands.
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are a regular requirement, including gloves and gowns.
Job Qualifications
• Completion of a master's degree in radiochemistry, organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, or other relevant discipline from a Canadian or Canadian recognized institution is required.
• Minimum of one year of experience within the last three years working in a Positron Emitting Radiopharmaceutical (PER) Radio pharmacy is required.
• Experience with the use of radionuclides or experience in radiochemistry is an asset.
Experience working with analytical equipment used for the quality control of radiopharmaceuticals is an asset.
• Knowledge of Canada's regulatory framework relative to radiopharmaceuticals including radiation safety (CNSC) and GMP (Health Canada) is an asset.
• Demonstrated quality assurance skills related to PERs and SPRs.
• Demonstrated superior skills in working with the latest electronic and computer technology systems.
• Demonstrated strong organizational skills.
• Demonstrated progressive leadership skills.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively and build and maintain effective working relationships.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.
