Senior Safety, Health and Environment Advisor

Reporting to the Sr. Safety Supervisor (Safety & Health), with functional support from the Team Lead Environmental Services, you will be required to provide oversight, leadership, professional and technical support in the development, implementation, administration and evaluation of all components of the Safety Health and Environment programs. You will be expected to exercise a considerable amount of personal initiative and judgment. The Senior Safety, Health and Environment Advisor will provide a strong field presence, promote and provide guidance on safety, health and environmental programs to ensure implementation of these programs and verify compliance. The incumbent will coordinate activities associated with maintaining the NL Hydro's Safety Management System and ISO 14001 registration, as well as promote an interdependent safety culture, which will enable our goal of zero harm and sustained safety performance across our operation.

You will be expected to provide input into the development and implementation of safety, health and environment management systems. You will also act as the initial point of contact for safety, health and environment matters within your area of responsibility. You will provide direction and guidance to operations managers/supervisors/employees at the Departmental/Regional level on a wide variety of programs and coordinate the development, implementation and administration of these programs to ensure processes are in place to verify compliance with internal programs and applicable regulations.
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety and Health

  • Adheres to, promotes and provides leadership on NL Hydro's Safety Management System development, implementation and continuous improvement.
  • Assists with strategic planning and the development, implementation and continual improvement of safety and health programs and initiatives.
  • Promotes and participates in safety and health related hazard recognition evaluation and control.
  • Assists with the development of site-specific safe work methods, practices and procedures.
  • Provides guidance on accident prevention and occupational health.
  • Participates in and provides guidance on safety and health related incident investigations.
  • Participates in and conducts safety and health related audits and inspections.
  • Assists with monitoring of contractors to ensure compliance with safety and health related requirements.
  • Assists in the preparation and monitoring of budgets related to safety and health.
  • Participates in continuing education and professional development relating to safety and health (training, conferences, lectures, seminars, etc.).
  • Maintains knowledge of relevant safety regulations, standards, practices, programs (e.g., NL Hydro's Safety Management System, NL OH&S Act and Regulations, CSA standards).
  • Assists in the development, implementation, delivery and continuous improvement of safety and health related training.
  • Act as an advanced Fist Aider on Site.
  • Become an active member of the site level emergency response team.

Environment

  • Adheres to, promotes and provides leadership on NL Hydro's Environment Management System as per ISO 14001 standards.
  • Assists with strategic planning and the development, implementation and continual improvement of environment programs and initiatives.
  • Promotes and participates in environment related hazard recognition evaluation and control.
  • Provide guidance on environnement protection programs and initiatives.
  • Participates in and provides guidance on environment related responses to environmental incidents.
  • Participates in and conducts environment related audits and inspections.
  • Assists with monitoring of contractors to ensure compliance with environment related requirements.
  • Assists in the preparation and monitoring of budgets related to environment.
  • Supports waste management processes.
  • Acts as on-scene commander in the event of an environmental emergency.
  • Participates in continuing education and professional development relating to environment (training, conferences, lectures, seminars, etc.).
  • Acts as Associate Management Representative for the Environmental Management System for Transmission Interconnections assets.
  • Maintains knowledge of relevant environment regulations, standards, practices, programs, etc. (e.g., Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations, Environmental Regulations, WHMIS).
  • Assists in the development, implementation, delivery and continuous improvement of environmental related training.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

To excel in this position, you will need to bring the following:

  • Bachelor Degree in Science or Engineering; or graduation from technical college with a technology related degree or a trades person (Electrical, Mechanical or Power Line) or Technologist (Electrical, Electronic or Mechanical preferred), and a certificate, diploma or degree in occupational health and safety or associated discipline?;
  • Minimum of 5-7 years progressively responsible experience, beyond attainment of the educational requirements, including extensive experience in the electric utility operation;
  • Must be certified or be eligible for certification as a Canadian registered Safety professional (CRSP);
  • Must have an in-depth working knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
  • Knowledge of current, emerging issues and trends impacting the utility industry and extensive knowledge and experience in stations, generating plants and line maintenance would be an asset;
  • Effective written and verbal skills;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills is required to effectively interact with a variety of personnel, and other industry participants;
  • Demonstrated ability to design, plan, and deliver programs to large and small groups;
  • Demonstrated experience within a team environment;
  • Proficient use of computer software in preparation of monthly reports, audit reports and survey results;
  • You must possess and maintain an appropriate valid driver's license;
  • Travel will be required;
  • Consideration maybe given to applicants with other levels of education combined with specialized training in occupational health and safety and demonstrated occupational health and safety knowledge and experience.
