Intermediate/Senior Materials Engineer

GEMTEC is a growing firm with offices throughout Atlantic Canada and in Ontario, and we are looking for a motivated and skilled Intermediate/Senior Materials Engineer to join our Team. We are seeking a full-time Intermediate/Senior Materials Engineer in our Halifax, NS, office.

The successful candidate will have the following:

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Currently registered, or eligible to register as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers Nova Scotia.
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited university.
  • Possess a minimum of 5 years of experience in civil engineering consulting.
  • Experience managing materials engineering and testing projects.
  • Experience delivering concrete laboratory testing services.
  • Experience training laboratory and field testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt.
  • Extensive familiarity with CSA, ASTM, and other applicable standards.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • CCIL certifications for testing concrete, aggregates, and/or asphalt are considered an asset.

Main Duties:

  • Managing civil engineering projects, with a particular focus on materials engineering and testing, construction oversight, and geotechnical engineering projects.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for key clients on materials, geotechnical, and civil engineering projects.
  • Perform project management functions, including proposal preparation, budget estimation, scheduling, scope management, technical reporting, maintaining quality throughout the project, and implementing improvement plans.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of existing and emerging regulatory requirements and best practices to ensure compliance with relevant codes, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Coordination of field materials and geotechnical resources.
  • Review and communication of field and laboratory reports and testing results to project teams and external clients.
  • Collaborate with the project team, external clients, and stakeholders to design and execute materials engineering solutions.
  • Development of technical reports related to materials engineering factual data and recommendations.
  • Supporting the operations of a CCIL certified concrete laboratory.
  • Mentor and training junior staff on field testing of aggregates, soils, concrete, and asphalt.
  • Mentor and training junior staff on laboratory concrete testing.
  • Maintain and calibrate testing equipment, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
  • Actively collaborate with Branch Managers on business planning and market strategy.
  • Provide leadership in client development and management, focusing on building sustainable relationships.
  • Field testing of aggregates, soil, asphalt, and concrete.
  • Various office, laboratory, and field tasks related to materials testing, geotechnical engineering, and environmental engineering.
  • Adhere to health and safety protocols, promoting a safe working environment.
  • Adhere to all company policies.

Position:

  • Full time (37.5 hours per standard week – varies with client workload).
  • Must have valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle. The position is based in Halifax, NS, however occasional travel within the Maritimes may be required.
