Purpose


The Senior Manager, Credit Support is responsible for contributing to the profitable growth and quality of the Private Banking credit portfolio by ensuring all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal credit policies and procedures to ensure process standardization and optimization across the Private Banking platform.

The incumbent will be responsible for monitoring of Collateral Management, Borrower compliance (margin shortfall/overrun) along with delinquencies report (Retail & Small Business products/On-Line Loan). Furthermore, the incumbent will work alongside with Manager, Credit Support to provide guidance on credit related matter and quality control oversight over loan documentation.

Through advanced knowledge of customized commercial lending, retail lending and risk management, the incumbent is responsible for identifying non-compliance with credit and operational processes and procedures and for managing and providing guidance/direction to the Private Bankers to ensure they are complying with credit and operational procedures.

Work closely with the Director, Credit Support and collaborate with National Wealth Credit Structuring team, the incumbent will contribute to process improvements and policy changes that results in an enhanced end to end client experience.

Contribute to the overall quality of the Private Banking credit portfolio

  • Perform file reviews/monitoring on credit portfolios to ensure that credit policies and processes are being adhered to, covenant compliance, credits are fulfilled per GRM authorization, satisfaction of conditions precedents and credit facilities that have not been accepted/fulfilled are advised.
  • Monitor adherence to key credit metrics - outstanding collateral defects, margin excesses, retail delinquencies, on-line loan delinquencies.
  • Analyze findings to determine portfolio weaknesses and control gaps and provide recommendations to Director – Credit Support.
  • Receive feedback and concurrence on findings, update findings when necessary, and develop action plans and resolution dates with stakeholders.
  • Keep abreast of policy, process and regulatory changes to ensure full comprehension of their impact on the credit portfolio.
  • Pro-actively identifies potential violations of regulatory requirements, ethical conduct, internal policies and procedures, in a timely manner and makes recommendations to mitigate business, compliance and operational risk.

Provide strategic direction and transparency of compliance metrics to Private Banking Leadership

  • Present a consistent National Credit Compliance Dashboard to Private Banking Leadership and advise of trends, gaps and provide recommendations for action plans.
  • Monitor credit compliance through review, analysis and trending of reports and responding to and coordinating corrective actions to address margin and limit excesses not addressed and outstanding collateral defects during file reviews.
  • Work closely with Banking team to ensure proper action plan is taken to cure the defect on file.
  • Escalate to Management of defect outside of guideline and/or not addressed in timely manner.
  • Respond to periodic requests from PB Leadership for refinements or new areas of focus which may be specific to new processes.

Provide direction for the resolution of challenges or gaps

  • Guide (Sr) Manager, Credit Structuring and Bankers to ensure timely resolution of challenges, negative trends or gaps in the credit processes which are discovered from file reviews.
  • Manage and track resolution of issues and escalate delays or challenges in resolution to Team Leads/Regional Directors, Credit Structuring.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled meetings with Banking teams to share best practises and common themes in order to enhance solution building skills and be aware of any evolving similar themes within each region.
  • Collaborate with various Partners such as GRM, ACE and Credit Fulfillment to best understand root causes of gaps or issues in existing processes and potential opportunities.
  • Contribute to the overall culture of accountability and requirement for local solution to any process issues resulting from gaps in execution.
  • Provide input and support approvals for changes with respect to resources, credit documentation, credit processes/lending programs/ operational processes and manual sections which would be necessary as part of solutions to systemic challenges.

Identify and drive efficiencies and product/process improvements

  • Cultivate an environment of continuous improvement by identifying and evaluating product and process gaps and developing and recommending revisions/amendments.
  • Providing input into, or recommending for approval, changes with respect to credit documentation, credit programs and products.
  • Work closely with Credit Structuring team and Bankers to ensure standardization of processes and execution is being followed in a consistent manner.
  • Maintain a close collaborative working relationship with Scotiabank Partners including GRM, ACE and the LSSB with a focus on process improvements for Private Banking and on bringing awareness to the unique characteristics and needs of our high value clients

Contribute to the overall quality of the loan documentation of all Ace specialty and GRM approved credit by

  • Providing credit guidance to Manager, Credit Support and his/her team (Credit Solutions Officer)
  • Performing loan documentation review to identify negative trends or gaps in credit approval vs loan documentation preparation
  • Identifying the training needs arising from the gaps in the loan documentation preparation and assisting in the development of and delivery of effective training program and/or information sessions for Credit Solution Officers.
  • Sharing identified gaps with Credit Structuring teams (Retail and GRM) to ensure that loan documentation is being prepared in an efficient way.
  • Keeping abreast of policy, process and regulatory changes to ensure full comprehension of their impact to the credit approval/loan documentation.

Do you have the skills to enable you to be successful in this role? We would love to work with you if you have:

  • University degree in business, finance, accounting or a related discipline required
  • 3+ years financial services industry experience
  • Strong credit skills and significant credit experience. Good understanding of the Bank's credit policies, practices and procedures (including loan documentation), as well as an awareness of business trends economic, technological, social, legal and political conditions and factors which could affect the viability of a credit
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to interpret results for the business and derive insights
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills – both verbal and written
  • Strong working knowledge of Power BI
  • Strong PC skills are required
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Proactive, self-directed, and able to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team
  • A high degree of flexibility is required to adapt to a wide variety of tasks and functions.
  • The incumbent must have a good knowledge of the broad Wealth Management offering, including the services of Scotiatrust, Private Investment Counsel, ScotiaMcLeod, Jarislowsky Fraser Limited, MD Financial Management;
  • Ability to deliver results in a fast-paced, challenging, and dynamic business environment.
