Purpose


The Analyst is responsible for contributing to the profitable growth and quality of the Bank's Technology and Innovation Banking portfolio by performing a multitude of tasks including due diligence, risk analysis, and presentation on complex deals in concert with the coverage team as well as ongoing portfolio monitoring and control.

The incumbent is responsible for due diligence, risk analysis and ongoing portfolio monitoring activities. The incumbent interfaces directly with clients at times, in partnership with the coverage team.

The incumbent liaises with Credit / Global Risk Management through the credit decision-making process and ensures all activities are conducted in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

Accountabilities:

Contributes to the profitable development of the Technology and Innovation Banking business by:


• Ensuring the timely analysis and presentation of credit / financial solutions proposals within prescribed segment;
• Providing prompt and sound recommendations in the analysis and adjudication of credit proposals;
• Ensuring that writings to the coverage team clearly convey the rationale for decisions, so that they may respond effectively to clients;
• Liaising with the Business Service Centre for fulfilment (including documentation, liaison with 3rd parties, security registration) and all service activities;

Ensures the accurate communication of the terms and conditions of an authorization and supervises the effective and timely implementation of same by:


• Reviewing all written authorizations to ensure accuracy, completeness and clarity.
• Ensuring prompt follow-up for acceptance of the authorization and reacting swiftly to any problems, amendments, extensions, reporting to senior management where necessary;
• Promptly and effectively addressing issues surrounding the adequacy, quality and completeness of loan documentation and security;
• Liaise to ensure any required changes to the coverage team and follow-up for the accurate execution and delivery of same prior to disbursement of funds.

Ensure the ongoing quality of the assigned credit portfolio through control and administration of the specific conditions and reporting requirements as specified in individual authorizations are adhered to by:


• Advising senior management of any credit weaknesses developing within individual accounts, by ongoing awareness and analysis of relevant financial, legal, political, technological, and industry information.
• Adhere to any regulatory and internal Bank policies and requirements;
• Maintaining adherence to the Bank's Anti-Money Laundering program and Guidelines for Business Conduct, by reporting any unusual occurrences or fraudulent activities per established procedures.

Understand how the Bank's risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank's Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Dimensions:


• Must have an in-depth knowledge of the Bank's lending policies, practices and procedures, as well as an awareness of business trends, economic, technological, social, legal, and political conditions and factors which could affect the viability of a credit.
• A solid knowledge and understanding of financial statements and accounting principles and policies is a must.
• Because of large volumes and tight time frames, the incumbent must possess effective communication skills, both written and oral.
• In the administration of credit, complex loan documentation and security provision requirements must be understood and applied. The incumbent needs to be a highly organized, analytical and logical person.


Education / Experience / Other Information:

Education:


• Undergraduate degree in business, economics, technology, sciences, or related work experience.
• In progress professional designation (i.e., CPA, CFA, or CBV, etc) or MBA is considered an asset.

Skills/Work Experience:


• Passion in working with entrepreneurs and investors in the innovation ecosystem.
• A high level of energy, commitment and strong sense of teamwork are needed to be successful in the role.
• Knowledge and understanding of the Technology and Innovation industry segments, the Technology and Innovation business banking marketplace in Canada, and knowledge of the assigned market area's key prospects, major companies, venture capital firms, and competitive positioning within the assigned market area an asset.
• Comfort with ambiguity as a high degree of flexibility is required to adapt to a wide variety of tasks & functions with changing priorities and demands.
• Basic understanding of financial analysis and risk analysis techniques.
• Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills (written and oral) that enable the incumbent to effectively articulate views both internally and externally.
• Strong PC skills are required, including working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
• Strong knowledge of relationship building and teamwork skills.


Working Conditions:


• Work in a standard office-based environment; non-standard hours are a common occurrence. Limited travel domestically. In order to provide a high level of customer service, prompt and timely responses to credit applications are required. The incumbent has no control over the number of applications, which require analysis and adjudication/recommendation at any given time. Normal sensory attention is required.
