Jump Recruitment is currently seeking candidates for the permanent, full-time position of Director - Estimating for our client, DF Barnes, based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

THE ROLE:

As Director - Estimating, you will oversee our estimating team, prepare accurate estimates, lead large competitive bids, and manage the bidding process from opportunity identification to bid submission. This role involves developing and implementing strategies to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of our estimating process to secure new business opportunities.

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE:

As the ideal candidate, you are a seasoned professional with extensive experience in the construction industry. You have a strong track record in developing accurate, detailed cost estimates across a diverse range of projects. Thriving in dynamic environments, you effortlessly manage multiple projects while maintaining precision in every estimate. Your expertise in estimation software, coupled with a history of supporting successful bids and driving project profitability, sets you apart. As a natural leader, you bring sharp analytical skills, excellent communication, and a collaborative approach, making you a valuable team member within a company committed to growth and innovation. Key qualifications include:

  • Fifteen (15) years estimating experience in the construction, mining, energy, and/or marine environment.
  • Relevant degree or diploma (e.g., Engineering), Professional Technologist (PTech), and/or Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) or experience in-lieu (Mechanical preferred)
  • Familiarity with all areas of construction with a concentration on MPEI, fabrication, and structural steel work especially in the mining, energy and marine environment.
  • Experience leading a team and working closely with executive management. Natural interpersonal and communication skills and can build seamless working relationships across an organization.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints. Proven competency in MS Word, Excel, Projects, and Primavera.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Possess natural confidence and are known as a candid team player who is open-minded and patient in your approach to estimating.
  • Plan and organize work activities, multi-task, prioritize, and juggle complex tasks and multiple projects while working under pressure and within tight timeframes.

KEY FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead and manage the Estimating Team on large multiple competitive bids concurrently with cross-functional coordination to ensure effective team efforts.
  • Create a positive work environment and develop, coach and motivate team members to excel in their roles.
  • Develop and implement best in class strategies to improve the estimating process.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, clients, and other stakeholders to gather project requirements and ensure alignment with project goals.
  • Review project specifications, drawings, and other documentation to determine bid requirements.
  • Conduct site visits and meet with clients to gather information and assess project needs.
  • Identify, manage, and communicate risks and support the decision-making process on bid release.
  • Work with management to establish labor costs, crew-hours, and project procedures.
  • Prepare bid execution plans that provide roadmaps to meet goals efficiently.
  • Oversee the preparation of bid schedules, safety plans, quality documentation, etc.
  • Review and analyze subcontractor and supplier bids to ensure competitiveness, accuracy, and compliance with bid and project requirements.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors for the preparation of material take-offs.
  • Participate in pre and/or post bid meetings.
  • Obtain quotations for materials, freight, and other inputs.
  • Coordinate bid inputs from all departments within DF Barnes.
  • Review quote letters, Terms & Conditions, and job estimates with appropriate management.
  • Monitor and ensure bid formats meet company and client standards for submission.
  • Log and maintain all RFQs in the estimating tracking system.
  • Maintain a database of bidding norms.
  • Source new suppliers and update the supplier database as needed.
  • Assist in contract negotiations with clients and subcontractors.
  • Submit bids to clients and follow up on all post submission clarifications.
  • Monitor tender sites and report opportunities to Executive Management.
