Meridia Recruitment Solutions is pleased to be partnered with them as they look to expand and bring an accounting professional to their team in the role of Controller. The Controller will be responsible for overseeing the financial operations and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records for insurance operations. This role is key in managing the accounting team, budgeting, reporting, and compliance within a dynamic insurance environment, encompassing both personal and commercial lines of insurance. This role is crucial in fostering and maintaining strong, supportive relationships with their talented broker team. The ideal candidate will ensure that financial statements are in accordance with regulatory standards, optimize financial performance, and provide strategic insights to management. This role will be onsite in their Elmsdale office.
Responsibilities will include:
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Oversee all aspects of the accounting function including general ledger management, accounts payable/receivable, and reconciliation of insurance-related accounts.
- Bi-weekly processing and overall management of payroll and employee benefits, and T4 reconciliations.
- Prepare reports for senior management and stakeholders, highlighting key performance indicators, financial trends, and variances.
- Day-to-day support of the broker team as they engage with clients to meet insurance needs, specifically relating to premium transactions.
- Monitor and report on profitability, liquidity, and capital structure for personal and commercial insurance lines.
- Ensure timely and accurate submission of regulatory filings, including tax returns, financial statements, and reports.
- Lead the budgeting process, ensuring alignment with corporate goals.
- Prepare financial forecasts and work with management to adjust strategy based on market conditions and operational changes.
- Track actual performance against budgets and forecasts, identifying areas for improvement or necessary adjustments
- Establish, monitor, and maintain strong internal controls.
- Assist in identifying potential financial risks, market shifts, and regulatory changes, and provide strategies to mitigate these risks.
- Coordinate audits and reviews by external auditor, CRA and other regulatory bodies, ensuring compliance with regulations and standards relevant to the insurance industry.
- Liaise with external stakeholders such as, but not limited to clients, banks, accountants, industry partners, Office of the Superintendent, etc.
- Foster a collaborative and efficient team environment and day-to-day support of the accounting team in their roles. This will include role coverage during absences
- Work closely with senior leadership to provide strategic financial analysis and insights that drive business decisions.
- Evaluate and recommend improvements to operational processes, ensuring best practices for accounting and financial management in the insurance industry.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- CPA designation.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in accounting/finance, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role.
- Experience within the insurance industry is an asset.
- Experience with accounting and payroll software. Experience with broker management systems is an asset.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to present reports and data in non-accounting useable formats to support senior team initiatives.
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to drive cross-functional collaboration.
- Interpersonal skills to coach and support staff and brokers as they communicate and engage with clients as it relates to premium transactions.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
