Job Summary:

The Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) works closely with adults who have various levels of speech, language, and communication challenges assessing clients' needs and developing individual treatment programs to enable each client to improve as much as possible.
At this time, SLP service delivery is able to be provided virtually and face-to-face.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manages a caseload of adults who have various levels of speech, language and communication challenges.
  • Assesses, diagnoses, and treats swallowing and communication difficulties arising from a variety of causes, e.g. congenital problems (such as cleft palate) or acquired disorders after a stroke or injury.
  • Develops, implements and revises relevant treatment programs supporting positive health outcomes.
  • Advises caregivers on implementing treatment programs and trains other professionals in therapy delivery.
  • Assesses communication environments of clients.
  • Monitors and evaluates clients' progress against planned outcomes.
  • Works with clients in a one-to-one basis or group environment to deliver therapy.
  • Writes and maintains confidential client case notes and reports, as well as information for clients, caregivers and other professionals.
  • Manages a caseload taking account of priority cases, waiting lists, successful outcomes, referral and discharge of service users.
  • Works with others to improve the effectiveness of service delivery.

External and Internal Relationships:

  • Works as part of a multidisciplinary team, alongside other health professionals such as doctors, nurses, psychologists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.
  • Liaises with professionals in education and the social services.

Education, Designations and Experience:

  • Master's Degree (or grandfathered prior to 1994 equivalent in Speech-Language Pathology).
  • Registered with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario.
  • Certification with the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in an equivalent role.

Skill Requirements:

  • Strong computer skills are required (including but not limited to Microsoft Office), as is the knowledge of computer software relating to speech-language skills.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the use of technology for documentation of patient outcomes.
  • Ability to communicate well, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to adjust to working in different social and economic environments.
  • Ability to respond to changes in patient caseloads and care needs.

Other:

  • Must have personal vehicle and possess both a current driver's license and proof of vehicle insurance
  • Current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check is required.
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment.
Working conditions and physical demands: This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activity including lifting, carrying (using proper techniques), bending, reaching, kneeling, and other movements that emphasize good body mechanics. Individuals in the role are required to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs throughout the day, with some tasks requiring fine hand movements.
