Demands, duties, qualifications
As part of the regional Promotion & Prevention Team, the Regional Suicide Prevention Coordinator will provide advanced

leadership in the development, coordination, planning, and implementation of specialized mental health promotion, suicide

prevention, and life promotion initiatives as identified in the Provincial Policy Framework for Mental Health and Addictions,

Primary Health Care Framework, Wellness Strategy, and other related strategies. The Regional Suicide Prevention

Coordinator will assess community needs, research appropriate initiatives, implement and evaluate programming, and work

with various stakeholders to facilitate the development of local and regional partnerships/networks. This role links with primary

health care programs and other wellness/health promotion initiatives. The Regional Suicide Prevention Coordinator will

collaborate with the Department of Health and Community Services and counterparts in the other NLHS zones to develop, implement, and evaluate the Provincial Action Plan to Promote Life and Prevent Suicide.

This position operates within a changing environment where health is monitored and influenced by current research practice in

health promotion, population health, health and social policy, and health and social service delivery systems.

The Regional Suicide Prevention Coordinator may be required to adjust hours occasionally to facilitate activities outside of

regular work hours. This position reports to the Program Manager for Prevention & Promotion. Travel within the Labrador-

Grenfell region will be required.

Job Qualifications
:

  • Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology, or a related Graduate Degree in a clinical discipline, such as Public Health, Health Promotion, Health Education, or related degree is required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience out of the last five (5) years working in the Mental Health and Addictions field, with a focus on Health Promotion, including experience utilizing a health promotion framework to inform policy changes and develop initiatives to enhance population health outcomes, is required.
  • Current membership/registration with a relevant professional association is required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of suicide prevention and primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence in project planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Experience and a strong knowledge base of community development and health promotion principles, and an understanding of the determinants of health.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health and Addictions field, including current issues, best practices, programs and services, and community resources.
  • Knowledge and experience in program planning, implementation, evaluation, research methods, project management, and community development.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in the MS Office Suite of computer software.
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to deliver/facilitate effective presentation and education.
  • Demonstrated high interpersonal effectiveness, good judgment, creativity, adaptability, and commitment to teamwork.
  • Demonstrated project management, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to stay current on relevant clinical, evidence-based practice to enhance and support program planning, development, and evaluation within the service area.
  • Ability to manage continuous improvement and quality processes.
  • Ability to foster and promote a safe and healthy workplace.
  • Ability to build networks and manage relationships with internal and external partners.

  • Other related duties as required.
  • A valid Newfoundland and Labrador Class 5 Driver's License and the use of a private vehicle are conditions of employment.
  • A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.

Duties: (Included but not limited to):

  • Collaborate with regional, provincial and national organizations and partners to effectively plan, coordinate and implement suicide prevention/life promotion initiatives.
  • Coordinate the development, planning, and implementation of regional prevention/ promotion initiatives, using Best Practices for Prevention to guide initiatives.
  • Monitor the implementation of prevention/promotion initiatives throughout the region.
  • Identify resources and program materials to support the implementation of regional prevention/ promotion initiatives.
  • Maintain a specialized level of knowledge and skills pertaining to mental health issues through ongoing research and review of current literature.
  • Provide ongoing consultation regarding mental health promotion opportunities and strategies with staff, other professionals in the community, non-governmental organizations, community groups and the general public.
  • Collaborate with the Department of Health and Community Services and other NLHS zones on the development and evaluation of provincial mental health promotional materials.
  • Facilitate the development of local and regional prevention and mental health promotion partnerships/networks.
  • Participate in regional staff meetings and consultation meetings as required with the Mental Health and Addictions Management Team for the purpose of the planning, development and coordination of program activities to ensure effective service delivery.
