About Torbay

The beautiful Town of Torbay is a vibrant community with over 7,900 residents on the Northeast Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador. Torbay is home to over 150 businesses, three schools, numerous community groups, and many other amenities found in a thriving community. Situated right on the Atlantic Ocean, Torbay offers breathtaking views in a scenic, rural setting and is 5 minutes from the capital city of St. John's, and many urban amenities, including major retail centers and an international airport.

The Position

The Town is currently searching for a motivated, energetic, and enthusiastic individual to join our team as Immigration Settlement Coordinator. As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for promoting the Town of Torbay as a welcoming community for newcomers and their families. In addition to this key primary function, you will also be responsible for guiding the development of key policies and programs aimed at attracting and retaining newcomers.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

Specifically, the Immigration Settlement Coordinator will:

  • Work collaboratively with Town staff, elected officials, the business community and others to advance the Town of Torbay as a welcoming community for newcomers.
  • Act as the main point of contact for newcomers, other settlement organizations, and residents on matters pertaining to immigration settlement and support for the Town.
  • Develop effective accessible materials to promote the Town of Torbay as a top- of-mind location for newcomers to settle.
  • Plan, organize, and facilitate settlement-related workshops with newcomers, local business community and other groups.
  • Work with potential and existing newcomers to ensure that they have access to the support and services necessary to thrive in the community.
  • Represent the Town at events dealing with immigration issues and resettlement.
  • Prepare reports, presentations and other materials as required.
  • Reach out to existing newcomers in the community to ensure they are being supported.
  • Develop and prepare a public engagement framework to engage the local business community, community organizations and residents with respect to making Torbay a welcoming community for newcomers.
  • Reach out to the local secondary school system to inquire about opportunities to increase awareness of the benefits of welcoming newcomers.
  • Keep abreast of multi-cultural events happening in the region and events that the town could possibly host that promote multi-cultural learning.
  • Prepare regular reports on program outcomes as required.
  • Develop a rental database of available residential properties available in the area.
  • Complete all other duties associated with the position under the advice and direction of the Director of Economic Development & Tourism.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have previous work experience providing support to either newcomers or similar groups who experience barriers to accessing and navigating federal / provincial / local supports necessary to integrate into the community. This experience should be supplemented by a post-secondary education in a relevant field, or sufficient qualifications as determined by the hiring committee.

  • Knowledge and experience with the development and implementation of immigration services and the various supports available for newcomers.
  • Knowledge of Provincial / Federal immigration policies and programs that impact settlement / resettlement of newcomers in Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Experience in developing engagement strategies and related materials for diverse groups along with the ability to effectively engage with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of the needs, barriers and challenges newcomers face when looking to resettle.
  • Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members of the public in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships.
  • Ability to contribute as a team player with personal commitment to the Town's mission, values and guiding principles.
  • Strong knowledge of the entire Microsoft Office Suite of products and other computer software skills required to fulfill the duties of the position.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license for the Province of Newfoundland & Labrador and the ability to be insured under the Town's normal insurance policy.
