We've gained a reputation as one of Canada's most exciting orchestras, and we're proud to be a national leader in performance, programming, and community engagement.

Symphony Nova Scotia is committed to fostering a respectful workplace that supports professional and collegial working relationships, honest and considerate communication, and an accessible and inclusive environment. We welcome and encourage applications from individuals who are Indigenous, African Nova Scotian, or from other racially visible groups, and/or who self-identify as 2SLGBTQIA+, are neurodiverse, or have a disability. We are happy to provide accommodation to those who request it.

As Symphony Nova Scotia's Director of Marketing & Communications, you are committed to building and nurturing the orchestra's connections to its varied audiences, partners, and communities. Reporting to the CEO, you work collaboratively across departments and with a small but high-performing staff team to generate in the range of $1.5-2 million in earned revenue each year.

You are a creative, forward-thinking communicator, with extensive marketing and advertising expertise, very strong writing skills, and the ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced and technical environment. You are a key member of the senior leadership team, directly responsible for the marketing and communications team, and work collaboratively across all departments to achieve organizational goals.

About the Role

Marketing & Revenue Development

  • Set and manage revenue targets, price points, packaging, discounting, and promotions for all campaigns and activities
  • Develop and direct all marketing and advertising campaigns, including a large-scale annual subscription campaign, an extensive single ticket sales campaign, and targeted show-by-show campaigns, with a goal of earning $1.5-2 million in revenue each year
  • Increase accessibility and awareness among new audiences; manage and continually improve audience experience
  • Stay current on industry trends and audience feedback; direct all internal research initiatives
  • Supervise box office relations and processes, including ticket sales and reservations, complimentary ticket practices, and point-of-sale communication

Communications & Community

  • Develop and supervise all internal and external communications goals, tactics, and messaging, including a comprehensive annual marketing plan and budget
  • Create and coordinate clear, consistent, and compelling communications across an extensive variety of channels, including print, email, audio, video, direct mail, e-commerce, traditional media, and social media
  • Manage Symphony Nova Scotia's brand, public image, and online presence
  • Seek out and steward partnerships and cross-promotions with local media, artists, and arts organizations
  • Support funder stewardship goals and provide written copy and deliverables for funding applications
  • Collaborate with an external team of design firms, web developers, and printers to meet communications goals
  • Spearhead and support multiple live community events and projects (e.g. Symphony Week)

Management & Administration

  • Hire, support, and supervise staff and collaborators with sensitivity and kindness
  • Develop, monitor, and meet combined budgets for the season
  • Support and coordinate Symphony Nova Scotia concerts, events, and projects as needed

About You
You are a thoughtful and innovative collaborator with excellent writing and editing skills, as well as a keen eye for detail and exceptional project management skills. You can craft consistently clear, highly compelling copy for a variety of audiences, and have experience managing graphic and web design with internal and external partners. You have experience developing and managing expenses, revenues, and large budgets, and can provide analytical reporting across multiple platforms, ensuring that Symphony Nova Scotia not only achieves but exceeds revenue goals. You are able to work both independently and within a remote and flexible work environment, and you are able to participate and work effectively as a team member. You are committed to fulfilling the mission and vision of Symphony Nova Scotia and embrace our core values.

Work Environment & Expectations
Symphony Nova Scotia offers a flexible working environment, with generous vacation and wellness support, hybrid work-from-home allowances (2+ days a week in the office are required), and comprehensive health benefits.

The successful candidate will be required to have reliable internet access and availability during regular work hours (9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday), and will work 35-hour weeks, plus evening and weekend events.

Salary Range
$90,000 to $110,000 negotiable.
