Higher Talent, on behalf of our client, Atlantic Cultivation, is seeking to fill the full-time role of Controller, in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.
About Atlantic Cultivation
Atlantic Cultivation is a fully integrated cannabis producer and retailer based in Newfoundland, Canada. They cultivate strains of exceptional quality for our Tantalus, 3rd Coast Genetics and Naked Mummer brands in our purpose-built facility in St. John's.
THE ROLE:
Reporting to the CEO, the Controller will play a critical role in daily accounting and financial management of Atlantic Cultivation and its retail subsidiary Atlantic Cannabis. The Controller will provide accurate information to the Board of Directors including analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and preparing financial reports. The Controller will be responsible for directing and managing the company's accounting team, including establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Prepare financial statements and reports to present to the ACL board.
- Supervise and support the accounting team, which includes inventory costing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, banking, and cash management.
- Attend board meetings and bring financial insights to the board for discussion.
- Ensure financial compliance with financial covenants, regulators, and CRA.
- Identify financial risks and maintain an effective internal control system.
- Assist the executive team in evaluating the financial and accounting impacts of new business opportunities or projects.
- Identify and secure the resources that the accounting team needs for success.
- Collaborate with HR on resolving HR opportunities and issues that may arise in the accounting team.
- Generate and communicate the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for the needs of relevant stakeholders.
- Lead periodic forecasting/budgeting and year end financial audit processes.
- Investigate and make recommendations for an integrated inventory management system.
- Understand and balance the needs of:
- The board
- The executive team
- All other functions and departments
- Business partners and suppliers
- Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation (NLC)
- Banking Partners
- Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
- Health Canada
- Ensure exceptional communication and ethical business practices are always top of mind.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-secondary degree/diploma in accounting.
- Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation, or equivalent.
- 5+ years' experience in a senior-level accounting role.
- Experience in accounting systems, preferably Netsuite, cash management, budgeting, internal controls, business planning, and asset management.
