If you are passionate about healthcare and emergency services, then this is for you. We are excited to announce that NLHS will fund your training for the Certified Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course, a 14-day program, completed partially online. This training is offered in collaboration with Eastern Safety Services (
www.easternsafety.ca) and classes will be held January 12-25, 2025. Please note, you must be available for in-person classroom instruction for four days during this period in Happy-Valley Goose Bay. Travel, accommodation and meals will be reimbursed based on eligibility criteria.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
As an EMR you will be a key member of the paramedicine team, directly impacting patient outcomes in critical moments. Your role will go beyond just operating an ambulance - you will be responsible for providing immediate care and support to patients in high-pressure situations. Here is a closer look at your day-to-day:
EMERGENCY CARE:
- Responding to medical emergencies, operating the ambulance safely, and transporting patients requiring urgent care.
- Conducting patient assessments during transport, monitoring their condition, and providing stabilization as needed.
- Safely lifting and transferring patients, including in challenging environments, and administering Basic Life Support (BLS) as required (CPR, oxygen therapy, etc.).
COLLABORATIVE CARE:
- Communicating effectively with patients, families, and team members to provide reassurance and critical information in high-pressure situations.
- Supporting multi-casualty incidents and coordinating care and transport efficiently with the team.
PATIENT CARE:
- Assessing and treating a range of injuries and illnesses, from trauma to respiratory emergencies.
- Using medical equipment (e.g., stretchers, oxygen tanks, heart monitors) to stabilize patients and ensure safe lifting and extrication from challenging environments.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT:
- Gaining opportunities for career advancement into roles such as Primary Care Paramedic or Advanced Care Paramedic, with additional training and certification.
- Participating in hands-on training and real-life scenario exercises to enhance skills and readiness.
- Contributing to patient and crew safety by identifying risks and implementing protocols during transport.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Driving Skills: Valid Class 04 driver's license and a clean driving abstract ( or be willing to obtain the same within 2 weeks of acceptance into the training course ), ensuring safe operation of the ambulance in emergency situations. Class 4 license must be obtained prior to hire.
Physical Strength & Stamina: Ability to lift and transfer patients (up to 100 lbs. or more) and perform physically demanding tasks, including patient positioning and transportation in challenging environments. Must pass physical capability testing.
Standard First Aid with CPR level C
Clear Background Check: Satisfactory criminal record and vulnerable sector check are required.
Licensure: Successful completion of the Certified Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course and the Canadian Organization of Paramedic Regulators (COPR) exam. Ability to obtain EMR licensure from the Newfoundland and Labrador Paramedicine Regulator (NLPR) and medical authority from the Office of the Provincial Medical Director (OPMD).
Communication Skills: Strong communication skills in English, essential for interacting with patients, families, and team members in high-stress situations.
Emotional Resilience: Ability to maintain composure and emotional resilience in high-pressure scenarios, supporting both patients and team members during emergencies.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Competitive Salary : Earn $23.78 to $26.19 per hour (CG25), plus great health, dental, and pension plan benefits.
Shiftwork : 75 bi-weekly hours; 12- and 24-hour shifts with varying days, nights, weekends, on-call, and standby hours.
Training Funding & Exam Information: NLHS will provide all funding for the EMR training course (14-day, online and in-person training), plus all materials. Candidates will be selected based on qualifications (as listed above) and the application process. Those selected will receive financial support to cover the cost of the EMR certification program. Upon successful completion of the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification program, candidates are responsible for completing the Canadian Organization of Paramedic Regulators (COPR) exam at their own expense. Successful completion of the COPR exam and registration with the NLPR is a condition of employment and requirements to be hired.
