CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Operational Oversight:
- Coordination:
- Oversee real-time coordination of vessel docking, loading/unloading, and RoRo operations.
- Monitor truck and rail logistics to prevent bottlenecks and delays.
- Resource Management:
- Efficiently allocate labour and equipment to optimize throughput and minimize costs.
- Track operational metrics, including turn times, productivity rates, and safety performance.
LABOUR RELATIONS AND MANAGEMENT:
- Union Collaboration:
- Maintain a thorough understanding of CBAs with Locals 269 and 1325.
- Resolve labour disputes diplomatically and within the parameters of agreements.
- Leadership:
- Provide supervision and mentorship to unionized leadership (e.g., Walking Boss, Foreman).
- Team Leadership:
- Ability to inspire and maintain morale across diverse teams.
- Fair but firm approach to discipline and performance management.
SAFETY AND SECURITY:
- Incident Handling:
- Lead investigations promptly after incidents, identifying root causes and mitigating risks.
- Maintain compliance with safety regulations and security protocols (e.g., ISPS Code).
- Proactive Measures:
- Conduct regular safety audits and drills.
- Collaborate with teams to implement preventative safety measures.
CUSTOMER SERVICE:
- Act as a point of contact for clients (shipping lines, trucking companies, rail operators).
- Anticipate customer needs and proactively resolve issues to maintain satisfaction.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Grade 12 high school diploma; along with two years post-secondary education in administration, operations and/or safety.
- At least 5 years' experience working in a marine terminal/industrial environment in the areas of administration, operations/and or safety. Experience in compliance, prevention, loss control and/or risk management techniques, along with their related reporting procedures are also required.
Technical Knowledge:
- MS Office including: (Word, Access, Excel), Outlook Email, Adobe Pro, Internet, scheduling software such as ERP/Terminal operating systems.
- Familiarity with terminal operating systems (TOS)
- Understanding of industry regulations (e.g., OSHA, IMO, and local port authority guidelines).
Soft Skills:
- Communication:
- Effectively relay expectations and feedback to both unionized and non-unionized staff.
- Strong negotiation skills when dealing with unions or customer escalations.
- Problem Solving:
- Rapid decision-making in dynamic, high-pressure environments.
- Analytical mindset to investigate incidents and improve processes.
