Demands, duties, qualifications

Definition of work:

This is a professional nursing leadership position that requires extensive experience and current knowledge of all aspects of the Surgical Services Program. The Clinical Educator is accountable for educator responsibilities in the Surgical Nursing and Endoscopy areas, as well as some educator responsibilities for Perioperative and Ambulatory Clinic areas. Administrative oversight will be provided by the Manager of Surgery and Endoscopy. The educator is responsible for utilizing best practice and national standards of practice to develop, coordinate, and implement orientation for new staff and ongoing education for current staff and acts as a clinical resource for other partners of the health care delivery team.

The educator is responsible for developing policies and procedures as they relate to the surgical services program and ensuring staff are familiar with same and will provide leadership to nurses in an environment which promotes the strategic direction of the organization. The successful candidate must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for promoting and supporting person-and family-centered care, demonstrate a commitment to safety and partner with all team members to improve worker and patient safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks and implementing improvements.

Required qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in nursing.
  • Current registration with the Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Minimum of five (5) years clinical experience in surgical services, two (2) of which would be preferable to be in an operating room setting. Two (2) years of surgical services experience must have been within the last four (4) years.
  • Current BLS certification for health care providers from the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
  • Demonstrate;
    • consistent professional approach,
    • commitment to the organizational values and displays those values in all components of work,
    • strong leadership ability,
    • knowledge of the principles of adult learning, staff development and performance reviews,
    • ability to manage conflict,
    • understanding of lean improvement methodologies,
    • understanding of the evaluation process and the QI process,
    • commitment to personal continuing education,
    • ability to work with computers including the Meditech system and Microsoft (TEAMS, Excel, Word, etc.),
    • superior written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal and facilitation skills,
    • ability to prepare and present educational material in an effective, concise manner,
    • ability to develop comprehensive learning needs assessment of clients and staff and develop work objectives based on results of assessment,
    • knowledge of current nursing research and practice standards.
  • Consistent demonstration of Central Health's corporate values; Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Equity and Safety.
  • A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required for this position.
  • A satisfactory certificate of conduct from the local police authority.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Conflict resolution training.
  • Previous teaching experience.
  • Nursing leadership course.
  • Lean green belt training.
  • LEADS training.
  • Post basic program in perioperative nursing.
  • CNA certification in medical-surgical, perioperative or gastroenterology nursing.
