STUDENT AFFAIRS & SERVICES: STUDENT HEALTH CENTRE
The Student Health Centre (SHC), a department within the Health and Wellness Division of Student Services, offers a full range of family-practice-style medical services to the students of UNB, Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick (DMNB) and Saint John College (SJC). With a nurse practitioner, physician(s) and access to a dietitian, and administrative support staff, the SHC provides appointments for students in person, by phone or virtually. The SHC also provides support to the university and its members through awareness programs, vaccination clinics (often in association with the Nursing Department), STI/STBBI testing programs, and a variety of other endeavours. The Health and Wellness Division provides a broad range of supports to students, related to their personal wellbeing, including health, counselling, accommodation of disabilities and related activities.

Full-time | 1-year Term | Saint John | On-Campus

Standard Work Hours: Mon - Fri | 8:15 am - 4:30 pm | 36.25 hours per week

Additional Working Conditions:

  • This position functions in an expanded role for nurses that works with or without a Nurse practitioner or physician on site.

Salary Range: Per NBNU rates

YOUR FOCUS

Under the general direction of, and reporting to, the Nurse Practitioner, the Mental Health Nurse provides nursing care and support for students at UNB through direct nursing assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation. The Mental Health Nurse is responsible for triaging students presenting with a variety of mental health concerns, offering one on one support, group support and educational presentations. The Mental Health Nurse will advocate on behalf of students and identify appropriate interventions that promote a greater level of wellbeing for individuals and the campus.

  • Provide supportive evidence-based counselling such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, strength-based coaching, motivational interviewing and suicide assessment and intervention.
  • Perform within the defined scope of practice in accordance with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick.
  • Conduct mental health assessments.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans.
  • Monitor medications for therapeutic responses and provide client education on medications including purpose, proper administration, intended effects and side effects if necessary.
  • Provide brief interventions to students in acute distress during regular work hours and ensure that students, staff, and faculty are aware of after-hour crisis lines and support systems.
  • Provide support and increase awareness around mental health for students, staff and faculty as needed.
  • Participate and consult with inter-disciplinary team colleagues related to individual clinical care when required.
  • Participate in programs/projects that increase the awareness of mental health services.
  • Develop and deliver mental health educational outreach programs and promote awareness of services.
  • Work collaboratively with other team members.
  • Ensure that the mental health needs and wellbeing of the students are met to the extent possible within the scope of the Student Health's Centre's services.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Certificate in Mental Health Nursing or CNA certification.
  • Minimum of 3 years recent and direct Mental Health experience.

Additional Strengths

  • Masters in Nursing is an asset.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric illness and diagnosis in the DSM-V.
  • Active Registration with Nurses Association of New Brunswick.
  • Current Basic Life Support, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).
  • Basic Addictions Knowledge.
  • Motivational Interviewing.
  • Demonstrated awareness of the Mental Health Act, Social Development protocols and NB Addiction withdrawal protocols.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication and organizational skills.
