What you will do

The Design Branch is seeking individuals to join the team in the following positions:

As an Intermediate Bridge Design Engineer and a Bridge Maintenance Engineer working in Fredericton, NB. This is advanced professional engineering work as a member of a team of technical professionals providing structural design and/or maintenance expertise for the efficient and effective management of GNBâ??s inventory of transportation structures.

Intermediate Bridge Design Engineer

Reporting to the Senior Bridge Design Engineer, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Structural analysis and design of highway bridges, working with multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Tender document preparation, including particular specifications, plans, quantity calculations and cost estimates;
  • Review of shop drawings and formwork drawings;
  • Structural load capacity evaluations;
  • Managing related consultant activities, including tracking of expenditures;
  • Supervision and mentoring of junior engineers and technicians;
  • Provide guidance and recommendations regarding replacement, maintenance and rehabilitation of bridge structures.

Bridge Maintenance Engineer

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Bridge Maintenance, the successful candidate will have knowledge of bridge design, construction and/or maintenance and be responsible for the following:

  • working with others in the team to identify maintenance needs of the provinceâ??s bridge and large culvert inventory;
  • managing inspection of the provinceâ??s bridge and large culvert inventory, including evaluation of damage and determination of necessary repairs;
  • providing expertise, guidance, technical support and recommendations to regional bridge maintenance personnel related to structural maintenance activities on bridges, large culverts, seawalls, retaining walls and related infrastructure;
  • supervising and mentoring of junior engineers and technicians, including external resources when required;
  • supporting development of the provincial bridge/large culvert maintenance programs, the sourcing of bridge materials and the associated Capital and Ordinary budgets.

  • Office location: 440 King Street, Fredericton.
  • Open office layout.
  • Standard hours of work: Monday â?? Friday.

  • Some travel within the province will be required.

Essential Qualifications:

Intermediate Bridge Design Engineer:

  • University degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of related structural engineering analysis and bridge design experience including three (3) years of supervisory and design management experience
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick.
  • Experience with the application of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code and Commentary.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid Class 5 driverâ??s license as issued by the Province of New Brunswick.

Bridge Maintenance Engineer:

  • University degree in Civil Engineering
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of related structural engineering analysis, bridge design or bridge maintenance experience including three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick.
  • Experience with the application of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code and Commentary.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid Class 5 driverâ??s license as issued by the Province of New Brunswick.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Written and spoken competence in English is required. Please state your language capability.

Asset Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate the following assets:

  • education specializing in bridge design and/or structural (bridge) engineering.
  • project management experience and/or previous experience in the preparation of tenders.
  • familiarity with the application of NBDTI Standard Specifications for Highway Construction.
  • engineering experience related to the design of new bridges and/or bridge rehabilitation projects.
  • experience with load capacity evaluations under relevant design codes.
  • experience related to the inspection of bridges and identification of required maintenance/repairs.
  • experience related to the maintenance/repair of bridge and other related transportation structures.

Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

SALARY:

Engineer 3: $2,840.95 to $3,888.52 bi-weekly, based on a 36.25 hours per week.
