A Nurse In Charge (NIC) is required to manage the provision of community health services in accordance with established standards of nursing practice and the philosophy and objectives of the Health and Social Services Authority to ensure the provision of safe standardized health care to the residents of the community they serve.

A NIC typically supervises one or more community health nurses and other staff with a Community Health Centre. Services may be provided within the Community Health Centre, via virtual modalities, at community halls, schools, and the long-term care facility or in a patient's home (e.g. Home Care). These services are intended to promote wellness, decrease suffering, and prevent injury. Services may be provided through independent practice or as part of an interdisciplinary care team.

Northwest Territories' NIC are provided with one of the highest salaries in Canada, including an incredible compensation and recruitment package. The annual salary range for a full-time NIC in the NWT ranges from $118,969 to $142,096, with potential additional gross earnings (before overtime, shift-premiums, and on-call pay) of between approximately $25,500 and $73,100 within the first year of employment, based on northern living allowance, recruitment bonus, 1-year retention bonus, and other paid benefits.

Additional benefits include relocation assistance, professional fees reimbursements, northern tax benefits (up to $11/day in deductions after 6-months of residency), outstanding leave benefits, a defined benefit pension plan, health and dental plans, maternity and parental leave, professional development opportunities, education support, and an optional deferred salary leave plan. NICs are also typically eligible for student loan forgiveness through Canada's Loan Forgiveness Program.

These positions typically require the completion of a nursing degree, three years relevant work experience in an acute care setting or northern health centre, and six months supervisory experience.
