Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services (MHS) that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth/811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.

We access all communities in Nova Scotia in a timely and efficient manner with our fleet of more than 180 ambulances and support vehicles operating out of 60+ stations. We respond to 165,000+ calls annually across the province, which are actively managed through the EHS Operations Medical Communications Centre, the hub of all emergency (911) and non-emergency (hospital transfers) medical calls.

The EHS Operations LifeFlight program provides even greater accessibility by responding to patients on scene or through inter-facility transports by our critical care team via helicopter, fixed wing, or ground ambulance.

In addition, paramedics in Nova Scotia participate in various programs both urban and rural such as community-based paramedic programs, collaborative emergency centres, and emergency preparedness and special operations, to name a few.

Nature and Scope

Reporting to the Manager of Health and Wellness, the Employee Health and Wellness Specialist is primarily responsible for the management of occupational and non-occupational disability claims with a focus on stay at work and return to work strategies. The Employee Health and Wellness Specialist assists with the navigation of resources to promote health and wellbeing. The Employee Health and Wellness Specialist develops relationships and works closely with all stakeholders.

As an employee of EMC, we are accountable to our patients and coworkers by participating in and supporting all safety related initiatives, as well as acting in a manner that fosters a culture that focuses on patient safety and a safe workplace.

Duties and Responsibilities

The position entails but is not limited to the following:

  • Manage disability claims and leaves
  • Manage medical accommodation requests
  • Develop stay at work and return to work plans
  • Liaise with insurance carriers and Workers' Compensation Board (WCB)
  • Assist with the navigation of available community resources and EMC's benefit program
  • Support employees during a medical absence from work
  • Support employees following a trauma-related event
  • Support health promotion and primary prevention activities
  • Provide verbal and written correspondence to employees and all stakeholders
  • Maintain regular contact with employees on leave and stakeholders
  • Maintain confidentiality of all medical information and documentation

Qualifications and Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Disability Management designation or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 3 years related experience, preferably in a unionized environment
  • Experience with WCB physical and psychological claims and related legislation
  • Experience with non-occupational disability claims and disability insurance programs
  • Experience with facilitating workplace accommodations
  • Experience working with emergency first responders a strong asset
  • Experience with mental health and/or health promotion an asset
  • Experience working in a healthcare setting an asset

Physical and Cognitive, Perceptual & Psychosocial Requirements

Physical:

  • Perform sedentary to light physical duties in a low noise environment
  • Maintain one position for possible long periods of time such as sitting
  • Complete computer-based work tasks
  • Talk for prolonged periods on video and phone calls
  • Travel, if required

Cognitive, Perceptual and Psychosocial:

  • Have interpersonal skills in dealing with people and working in teams
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment
  • Adjust to a fluctuating caseload and meet deadlines
  • Respond quickly to and remain calm in emotional and distressing situations
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Strong documentation and time management skills
  • Effective and timely verbal and written communication and oral presentations
  • Detail oriented, organized and an analytical thinker
  • Computer proficient
  • Understand medical terminology and medical information
  • Understand, speak, read, and write English to communicate effectively and write reports and letters
  • Demonstrate dependability and reliability
