Manager, Sport & Technical Programs
Role Description
Basketball Nova Scotia's (BNS) Manager, Sport & Technical Programs (MSTP) will work closely with staff, member clubs and key partners to lead, develop and implement the organization's coach development strategy, grassroots programming, provincial team program, and its equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA) plan and initiatives. The position will also provide key technical direction and support for the organization across all BNS projects, events, and programs.
Key Responsibilities:
Coach & Officials Development
In consultation with the Executive Director (ED), and in co-operation with member clubs and key BNS partners, the MSTP will lead the execution of BNS's coach and official development strategy and program including but not limited to:
- Manage the National Coaching Certification program (NCCP) for all BNS coaches (via Game Plan & The Locker systems) to ensure standards are being met.
- Plan, implement and lead clinics/workshops as part of the strategy for increased and accessible coach development across the province.
- Ensure Safe Sport training, education and reporting is at the forefront of coach development.
- Provide mentorship to club and provincial level coaches on a continual basis and gather feedback.
- With support from the Performance Lead (PL) and ED, lead the recruiting process for Provincial Team Program coaches.
- Work with the Nova Scotia Basketball Officials Association on strategy development and execution for the development, recruitment, and retention of officials.
Provincial Team Program Management
- With support from the PL, Operations Manager (OM) and ED, oversee the planning and execution of the Provincial Team Program including but not limited to coach selection, tryouts, gear/uniform ordering, media day planning, budget support and National Championships travel and logistics.
Technical Leadership & Support
- Work with the ED on the development of the Technical Leadership Plan as part of the new strategic plan.
- With input from the OM, oversee the seeding process and seeding committee for Provincial Club Championships.
- Provide technical direction & tournament scheduling support for all BNS run and partnered initiatives.
- Support the Operations Manager (OM) with technical support (rules and policies) for BNS run events and programs.
Grassroots Development
- Support promotion of and grow the Jr. NBA program in the province.
- Plan and execute annual development and special event camps throughout the province to raise revenue and increase the number of opportunities for youth to play the game.
- Support the development of age-appropriate curriculums.
EDIA Programming
- In consultation with the ED and Board of Directors EDIA representative, assist in supporting EDIA development, awareness, and increased participation for basketball across the province.
Administration and Communication (supporting key responsibilities)
- Plan and execute all coaching development sessions and tracking through Game Plan/The Locker.
- Oversee tracking of safe sport credentials and verification for all BNS coaches.
- Plan, coordinate, and activate all plans related to key areas of focus including strategy, timelines, budget, tactics, and reporting.
- Field and respond to all inquiries related to coaching development and grassroots/EDIA programming.
- Prepare status reports for the ED and Board on all activities and progress.
Organizational Structure:
The MSTP reports to and takes direction from the ED. BNS supports a hybrid working environment with regular Monday to Friday work hours, with occasional evenings and weekends around events or meetings.
Qualifications/Experience/Attributes:
- Education in Business, Sport Administration or Sport Sciences is considered a strong asset.
- Understanding of NCCP & basketball programming provincially and nationally.
- Basketball experience with a club, collegiate, USport, National or BNS Provincial team level.
- Understanding and knowledge of sport policy and governance.
- Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and proactively
- Experience demonstrating positive culture and sport values.
- Project management experience.
- Valid criminal record, vulnerable sector & child abuse registry checks.
- Proficiency using computer programming including Microsoft Office Suite.
The position is a full-time position based out of Halifax. Salary: $60,000-65,000 based on experience.
