Demands, duties, qualifications
Job Summary
The Operating Room Technician is responsible for the preparation of the surgical set up (such as instruments, drapes, sponges, sutures) and providing assistance to surgeons and medical specialists during surgical procedures. Work also includes checking case carts/supplies for completeness; collecting and handling specimens; removing soiled linens, sharp objects, supplies and instruments as per operating room policies and procedures; and performing other related duties as required.

Job Demands
By applying for this job, you acknowledge an understanding that regular requirements and demands of this job include (but are not limited to):
Lifting and moving is required to transfer patients from the operating room table to stretchers, to lift large, heavy containers of medical instruments and to move medical equipment and to push and pull stretchers and beds.
Standing for prolonged periods of time at the operating room table with minimal opportunity to move. Working in awkward or cramped positions required to perform daily tasks.
Fine finger and precision work is required to constantly handle sharp instruments; medical instruments and equipment require accurate control and steadiness; gross motor skills requiring strength to move and position patients.
Visual concentration is required to pass and receive sharp medical instruments from surgeons, to watch the surgeon to anticipate needs and to complete computer charting.
Auditory concentration is required to listen to surgeons requiring specific medical instruments during surgery and to other team members.
Repetition requiring alertness is required when passing sponges or sutures during emergencies and to hold equipment during surgical procedures.

Job Qualifications
Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Graduation from an approved Licensed Practical Nurse program is required.
Current licensure with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (CLPNNL).
Graduation from an approved Operating Room Technician course is required.
Considerable knowledge of operating room procedures, equipment and instrumentation.
A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.
