Behaviour Intervention Mentor – Temporary
This position involves the planning and provision of services to assist school teams in supporting student behaviour. Under the direct supervision of the principal, and as part of the Education Support Services Team (ESST), the Behaviour Intervention Mentor (BIM) assists in the planning and implementation of direct services to students through evidence-based interventions and strategies to develop a positive learning environment for all. In addition to direct support of students, duties will also include supporting teachers through the modelling of tier 1 strategies for the classroom environment. This role requires providing individual and group interventions, supporting teachers in strategies for behaviour and collaborating with various professionals as a member of the ESST. The BIM also participates in case management and case conferencing in the development of intervention plans for behaviour. Other duties may be assigned, as necessary.
DEFINITION: This is professional and mentoring work in the planning and provision of services and activities to directly assist school teams in supporting students with challenging behaviour such that it does not impede the teaching and learning process in the classroom. Working under the umbrella of Education Support Services, the Mentor assists School Intervention Workers and other school personnel in the provision of direct services to students through evidence-based interventions and strategies to accomplish the desired end. It is expected that such strategies will lead to development of social skills, communication skills, self-esteem and resilience of students involved. Duties will also include providing training to School Intervention Workers and other school personnel in such areas as conflict management anger management, observation techniques and teaching social skills. Work will also consist of developing strategies to keep students retention to promote positive social and communication skill development in students, as well as support the school team in developing positive learning environment initiatives. Work may also include conducting individual or group interventions, support teachers in behaviour management and collaborate with various professionals in the school system and in the community, such as teachers, school psychologists, social workers, probation officers and mental health professionals. The Mentor may participate in case management and case conferencing in the development of intervention plans for behaviour management plans. Other related duties may be assigned, as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from university at the bachelor level in psychology, social work, or education with specific knowledge regarding behavioural and mental health challenges. Knowledge of positive support, behaviour management strategies, applied behaviour analysis and crisis intervention is desirable.
