Job Summary
The Medical Imaging Program is a clinical support program of NL Health Services and provides services to all 42 Medical Imaging sites in the province. The program serves to provide its consumers with quality diagnostic and therapeutic procedures that assist in the provision of appropriate and timely patient care. The program is an integral component of the diagnostic and treatment services made available to internal consumers and external consumers. Timely and accurate Medical Imaging is used to guide appropriate patient management, minimize length of hospital stays, and provide invasive procedures using imaging techniques in lieu of more invasive and costly surgical techniques. The environment is highly technical, characterized by dynamic technological advancements requiring constant knowledge development. Healthcare Medical Imaging is a high profile service constantly under public, political, and media scrutiny in terms of service delivery, access to services, and efficiency.

The Medical Physicist plays key role in the Radiation Safety team and is responsible for a broad range of support and technical expertise for the Radiation Safety Program at NL Health Services. This person will take a lead role in the Corporate Radiation Safety and Quality Assurance Committees to promote best practices throughout NL Health Services. The Medical Physicist will develop and maintain an active research program and teach at the technical, graduate, and post-graduate levels, as needed. A part-time clinical appointment with Memorial University Facility of Medicine in the Discipline of Radiology to support research and teaching activities may be offered.

Duties of this position includes the following:
- Ensuring that all activities involving radiation emitting devices are conducted in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Performing structural shielding design / calculations for medical x-ray imaging facilities, and evaluating existing lead shielding integrity and thickness.
- Providing radiation dose calculations and risk evaluations for patients and staff.
- Evaluating radiological imaging equipment performance, including performing acceptance testing.
- Monitoring and auditing compliance with relevant regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Responding to, investigating, and performing follow up of radiation safety related incidents/accidents.
- Developing, implementing, and promoting safe practices and conducting audits of the practices.
- Developing and providing education and training in radiation safety.
- Preparing technical reports, including but not limited to, shielding reports, dose assessments from unplanned events, and hazard / environmental assessments related to radiation emitting devices.
- Developing provincial guidelines and documents specific to NL Health Services employees and other stakeholders as required.
- Reviewing occupational radiation exposure levels and making recommendations as needed.
- Assessing, with the Radiation Safety Officers and Nuclear Medicine Medical Physicist, the various dosimetry services available, as needed.
- Performing other duties as required.
- The incumbent is required to travel between sites within NL Health Services. A minimum of 40% of time is spent at sites/health centers across Newfoundland and Labrador.

Job Qualifications
- Successful completion of an accredited MSc or PhD in Medical Physics is required.
- Eligible for Certification in Diagnostic Imaging by the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM) is required (eligible for Certification as a Diplomat of the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or of the American Board of Medical Physics is considered equivalent).
- If not already certified in mammography or eligible for certification, then the candidate must be willing to train with a certified individual to become eligible.
- A minimum of 3 years of professional operational radiation safety experience, education or training within the last 5 years is required.
- Knowledge and understanding of radiation protection philosophies, procedures, equipment and techniques. Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment.
- Demonstrated technical expertise and knowledge of applicable legislation and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with both provincial and federal regulations involving radiation hazards and safety.
- Knowledge of industry-recognized radiation safety organizations and practice standards.
- Related scientific working experience in radiation physics, radiation protection instrumentation, and x-ray emitting equipment would be an asset.
- Must possess effective communication and interpersonal skills in investigating issues, writing reports, providing advice and guidance; work well independently and collaboratively with others in a team environment.
- Experience with teaching and training of staff preferred.
- Demonstrated organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work to meet deadlines & objectives.
- Proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint and Word and database applications.
- Experience working in a large teaching hospital environment would be an asset. Demonstrated a strong commitment to high clinical standards.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal, leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
- A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.
