Demands, duties, qualifications
The primary purpose of this position is to work as an active member of the Surgical Services team to provide a high standard of care for cleaning and sterilizing instruments and supplies for the Labrador Health Centre and catchment area. The Sterile Supply Technician is responsible for maintaining professional and organizational standards and practice in accordance with LG Model of Clinical Nursing Practice and reports to the Surgical Services Clinical Nurse Manager.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent;
  • Successful completion of a recognized Sterile Processing Technician Program/Course or willingness to complete (within a timeframe designated by employer);
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in CSR/OR;
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (CPR);
  • The successful applicant will be required to submit a satisfactory certificate of conduct;

Duties: (Included but not limited to)

  • Cleans, checks, and operates sterilizers, Steris System/OER Pros, washer disinfector, pasteurizer, ultrasonic cleaner and any other CSR equipment;
  • Cleans, disinfects, identifies, assembles and sterilizes equipment trays, instruments, and bundles;
  • Reprocessing flexible endoscopes, specialized and general surgical instruments including: disassembly, manual and/or mechanical washing;
  • Completes quality assurance checks as per manufacturer recommendations and hospital policy;
  • Handles and transports sterile supplies; contaminated instruments and equipment;
  • Checks and documents temperature and humidity in locations where sterile supplies are stored;
  • Keeps knowledge current by participating in continuing education programs;
  • Represents Surgical Services on committees as requested;
  • Assists in orientation of new staff;
  • Assists with checking, ordering, and restocking supplies for CSR and OR suite;
  • May be required to travel for orientation and/or certification process;
  • Other related duties as required.
