Employment Opportunity: Digital Archivist (full-time, 18-month contract, subject to a probationary period)

Established in 1789, the University of King's College is Canada's oldest chartered university and is associated with Dalhousie University. The incumbent is responsible for creating and maintaining an archives' online holdings system for the University of King's College Library and Archives.

The incumbent reports to the University Librarian and Archivist.

Specific Duties/Accountabilities

  • Works with the University Librarian and Archivist and other professionals to create King's own online holdings system using AtoM (Access to Memory - hosted by Artefactual).
  • Loads existing records and finding aids into King's AtoM from MemoryNS.
  • Maintains both systems.
  • Works with the University Librarian to determine priorities and develop a plan to scan and upload selected archival fonds.
  • Oversees scanning and uploading of images.
  • Assists in providing reference services for researchers seeking information in the archival collections.
  • Plans, directs, and reviews the work of student assistants assigned to work on this project.
  • Liaises with staff at Dalhousie Archives, the Council of Nova Scotia Archives, and Artefactual.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • ALA accredited master's degree in library, archival, or information sciences.
  • Experience with AtoM or similar online holdings system.
  • Knowledge of metadata standards and issues regarding digitization (including copyright), particularly RAD.
  • Knowledge of/interest in the history of Canada, Nova Scotia, and the University of King's College.
  • Project management skills and experience.
  • Ability to think creatively, work independently and collaboratively.
  • Public service skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, organizational skills, accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Able to lift and move file boxes (approximately 13kg)

Salary will be commensurate with level of education and experience. The salary for this position is $74,415 annually including a benefits plan with medical and dental.
