Job Summary
The Anesthesia Assistant I provides anesthesia care for both adult, pediatric and neonatal patients before, during and after surgical, medical and diagnostic procedures under the guidance of an anesthesiology physician. This position also provides ventilation strategies in adults and neonates and assists/manages difficult adult, pediatric and neonatal airways in the operating rooms and in remote and satellite areas of the hospital.
This position reports to the Division Manager of the Perioperative Program of the Health Sciences Centre and maintains accountability to the Professional Practice Consultant for Respiratory Therapy for professional integrity and practice issues.

The job regularly results in considerable fatigue requiring the need for strength and endurance. Regularly lifts up to 25 lbs.; occasionally lifts objects over 50 lbs.
Regularly stands and walks in the performance of activities and occasionally works in awkward and cramped positions.
Regularly uses fine finger or precision work when repairing and assembling anesthesia related equipment (anesthesia monitors, suction regulators, medical gas equipment, electronic charting).
When in surgery must be able to simultaneously operate a blood recovery machine, a rapid blood administration machine and several medication pumps with different drugs. High level of alertness and awareness of patient and monitors; cognitive of the numerical values and wave forms displayed on monitor.
Regularly listens for alarms on ventilator or monitors, hearing acuity of patients' lungs and determining whether patients are breathing adequately.
Time pressures, deadlines and/or interruptions occur regularly.
Exact results and precision is required for calibration of patient equipment.
Job Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited program in Respiratory Therapy is required.
Graduation from a recognized Post-Diploma Program in Anesthesia Assistant/Technology is required.
Proof of current registration with the NL Council of Health Professionals is required.
A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.
*The successful applicant must be willing to complete at the first available opportunity Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) in-house as determined by the employer.
***If there are no qualified Anesthesia Assistants, a Respiratory Therapist who is currently completing the AA program may be considered.
