Demands, duties, qualifications
Reporting to the Laboratory Technologist III, the primary purpose of this position is to perform laboratory testing in the Chemistry, Microbiology, Hematology, Blood Banking and Water Testing Sections of the Medial Laboratory Department at the Labrador Health Centre, under the medical direction of the Regional Medical Director of Laboratory Services/Regional Pathologist.

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion, and graduation from High School;
  • Must have trained as a Medical Laboratory Technologist at an approved and accredited Medical Laboratory Science training program;
  • Must be a registered Medical Laboratory Technologist with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS);
  • Must be registered with the Newfoundland and Labrador Council of Health Professionals;
  • Must be experienced in using the Clinical Meditech Modules - Laboratory Information System, and the Hospital Information System;
  • Must have good communications, and interpersonal skills, and be able to answer quest6ions from staff, and other stakeholders concerning procedures and processes in the Laboratory Department;
  • Must be willing to undertake additional and ongoing training in a timeline set by the employer to take further education courses with the CSMLS in Laboratory Safety, Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Chemistry, Microbiology, Hematology, and Blood Banking;
  • Must keep abreast of technological changes to update current knowledge and skills;
  • The successful applicant will be required to submit a satisfactory Certificate of Conduct.

Duties (Include but not limited to):

  • To perform diagnostic laboratory testing in accordance with accepted laboratory standards, and the policies and procedures of Labrador-Grenfell Health;
  • Ensuring that they personally perform and meet all the requirements for Laboratory accreditation as recommended by Accreditation Canada, and the Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare, IQMH, and that they maintain these standards at all times when they are working in the Laboratory Department.
  • Operates all the instruments in the laboratory with confidence and efficiency;
  • Participates in the laboratory department's quality improvement program by daily monitoring and recording of control results and assisting in the preparation of audits as assigned by the Technologist II and III;
  • Participates in the departmental equipment maintenance program by performing daily maintenance as outlined in the procedure manual;
  • Will be an effective part of the Medical Laboratory Team and will help monitor the inventory of supplies required in the Medical Laboratory Department, and will report any concerns on stock levels of any item to the Section Lead Medical Laboratory Technologist II or designate. Will also complete all of the inventory documentation required to monitor and maintain supplies correctly in the Medical Laboratory Department;
  • Must be an active part of the Medical Laboratory Team keeping all work areas, and the entire Medical Laboratory Department clean and tidy at all times. Supplies when delivered must be stored in the appropriate place, and not left standing in the Medical Laboratory Department unattended causing a potential hazard in the workplace.
  • Assumes responsibility for the overall daily operation of the laboratory department as assigned by the Section Lead Technologist II and Department Lead Technologist III;
  • Will be part of the Medical Laboratory Team to develop indicators that assist the Regional Laboratory Services to identify processes to improve quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of Regional Laboratory Services;
  • Is an effective participant in any quality improvement program in the Medical Laboratory Department, and as an active team member makes sure it is constantly being maintained within the Medical Laboratory Department;
  • Annually is an active team member of the required review processes in all of the specialized training programs that the incumbent has initially signed off as being competent in within the Medical Laboratory Department;
  • Follows infection control guidelines for "Standard Precautions" when handling samples and specimens as outlined in the Infection Control Manual;
  • Reviews annually, or as needed, the department's Fire and Evacuation, Emergency Planning, Infection Control, WHMIS, Laboratory Safety manuals
  • Assists in the orientation and training of new Medical Laboratory Department employees, and will also review the policies, procedures and equipment used in the Medical Laboratory Department with them.
  • Participates in the rotational system of twenty-four hour emergency standby as assigned by the Technologist II and III;
  • Protects the confidentiality of patient information and abides by the rules and regulations of the Labrador-Grenfell Health Regional as reflected in its mission, policies and procedures;
  • Participates and is a full member of the Medical Laboratory Department rotational schedule system of standby and shift work;
  • Participates in the continuing education programs provided by Labrador Grenfell Health and the professional association and keeps abreast of technological changes to update current knowledge and skills.
  • Safety is a priority for Labrador Grenfell Health. All staff (and volunteers) must/are responsible to ensure that safety for patients/residents/clients, coworkers and themselves is paramount in the workplace.
  • May be required to help in the preparation of reports for the Regional Director of Diagnostic Services, and the Regional Pathologist/Regional Medial Director of Laboratory Services;
  • Perform other related duties as required.
