Our team is seeking an Primary Care Paramedic for a full-time position. If no Primary Care Paramedic applicants, we will consider applications from Ambulance Operators/Attendants. We prioritize candidates based on their qualifications in the following order: Primary Care Paramedic, or Ambulance Operator/Attendant.
If the competition is awarded to an Ambulance Operator/Attendant as the next highest classification, they will be awarded as temporary full time (TFT) for a period of one year, with possibility of extension.
Job Summary:
The Primary Care Paramedic (or Ambulance Operator/Attendant),works as an integral part of the paramedicine program. The successful candidate will work within their scope of practice, including responding to emergency and routine calls, providing skilled basic and advanced emergency care or assistance to persons suffering from a variety of injuries or illnesses. The successful applicant is responsible for maintaining professional and organizational standards of practice.
The successful candidate must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for promoting and supporting person-and family-centered care, demonstrate a commitment to safety and partner with all team members to improve worker and patient safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks and implementing improvements.
The successful applicant will report directly to the Manager of Southwest Coast District [Operations Manager]. The base for this service is located at Jefferies.
Duties/Job Demands:
The Primary Care Paramedic works as an active member of the health care team providing pre-hospital assessment and medical care to people with acute illnesses or injuries while maintaining a high standard of care to the patients. Work is performed with considerable independence and is reviewed through observation, examination of records and reports, and the presence or absence of valid complaints. The Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) functions as part of an interdisciplinary team within healthcare facility units and ensures client and staff safety, and other related duties as required.
The Ambulance Operator/Attendant will be responsible for skilled work in the operation of ambulances in transporting patients while exercising care and skill in driving. The successful incumbent will provide assistance to the paramedicine staff in patient care, such as proper lifting of patients and other related duties as required.
Job Demands:

- Regularly lifts and moves patients and equipment (between 25-50 lbs.) and involved in heavy lifting/pushing/pulling of stretchers (100 lbs.) and patients;
- Constantly stands, bends, stretches, kneels or pushes and pulls; sometimes in small and cramped spaces.
- Constantly requires visual concentration or alertness to drive ambulances, complete site and patient assessments and to administer medications. Regularly there are time pressures in the pre-hospital emergency setting.
- Regularly there is lack of control over work pace occurs due to the unpredictable situations during a medical emergency, or unpredictable call volume.
Qualifications:
- Graduation from High School or equivalent;
- Graduation from an approved Primary Care Paramedic program, or Emergency Medical Responder course (10-day course) accredited by the Canadian Medical Association;
- Current registration with the NL Paramedicine Regulation as a PCP or EMR;
- Current medical certification with the Office of the Provincial Medical Director
- Possession of a valid Class 4 Driver's License as issued by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador;
- Current certification in Basic Life Support;
- Effective oral and written communication skills;
- Critical and sound decision making skills;
- Successful completion of the Physical Capability testing certificate (within the last 3 months) and continued responsibility to meet the minimum standards of physical capability as outlined in provincial policy;
- For standby, must be able to report to work within the required timeframe of 10 minutes or be willing to stay at the base.
- A satisfactory Driver's Abstract from Motor Vehicle Registration is required;
Salary:
- Primary Care Paramedic - CG-29 of the NAPE HS salary scale $27.07 to $30.07 per hour
- Ambulance Operator/Attendant - CG-25 of the NAPE HS salary scale $23.78 to $26.19 per hour
