Demands, duties, qualifications
The primary purpose of this position is to perform skilled work in support of the orthopedic services in clinics, emergency departments and operating rooms within a hospital, under the general direction of an Orthopedic Specialist. Duties include the application and adjustment of casts, splints, and other orthopedic devices.
Qualifications
:
Minimum: 2-year Diploma in Licensed Practical Nursing;
- Licensure for the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador;
- Training recognized by the Canadian Society of Orthopedic Technologists;
- Training under a Registered Orthopedic Technologist and/or Orthopedic Surgeons;
- Minimum: 1-2 years of experience preferred;
- Member of the Canadian Society of Orthopedic Technologists C.S.O.T.;
- The successful applicant will be required to submit a satisfactory certificate of conduct.
Duties and Responsibilities
: (Include but not limited to)
Plaster and synthetic cast applications; responsible for instructing patients on treatment and cast care;
- Adjustment and removal of a variety of casts, splints, and traction;
- Apply and remove dressings; assess condition of the wound prior to further treatment (i.e. casting, splinting);
- Cast applications - this involves adjusting, removing, repairing, replacing, bivalving, wedging, and windowing of a cast;
- Measure and fit patient for orthopedic devices and ambulatory aid; instruct patient regarding care and proper use;
- Assist in the application, maintenance and adjustment of traction;
- Order and maintain inventory and equipment;
- Complete the form to bill the patient and forward bill to Financial Services;
- Receive equipment out on loan to patient and fill out proper forms so patient can be refunded (i.e. crutches);
- Maintain up-to-date price list;
- Instruct patients/families in the care of casts, and back slabs, as well as skin care, and treatment plan;
- Collaborate with other health care professionals such as physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists, as required;
- Charting, documentation, and maintenance of accurate notes and records;
- Apply specialized casts (i.e. body cast, hip spica casts);
- Maintain clinic statistics;
- Other related duties as required.
