East Cumberland Lodge is a licensed long-term care facility with 74 beds, providing both Level I and Level II care to its residents. Situated in the scenic coastal village of Pugwash, Nova Scotia, the Lodge offers a supportive environment within a vibrant and close-knit community.
Position Summary
The Occupational Therapist (OT) reports to the Director of Resident Care and plays a critical role in enhancing the quality of life for residents by facilitating their participation in meaningful, everyday activities. The OT will provide comprehensive clinical services including initial and ongoing assessments, referrals, treatment interventions, and participation in care planning with a multidisciplinary team. The role is integral to care conferences and involves planning and implementing strategies for activities of daily living (ADL) assessments, restorative care, and a wide range of therapeutic interventions.
In a progressive long-term care (LTC) setting, the OT's scope will also encompass advanced dementia care through cognitive assessments and behavioral support, adaptive equipment recommendations, mobility and seating assessments, splinting, and feeding, eating, and swallowing interventions. The OT will actively contribute to restraint reduction efforts, falls prevention strategies, and lead in pressure wound management and prevention. As part of the multidisciplinary care team, the OT will work closely with residents, their families, and other healthcare professionals to deliver individualized care plans that optimize resident independence and well-being.
Qualifications:
· Fully licensed to practice as an Occupational Therapist in Nova Scotia, with registration in good standing with the College of Occupational Therapists of Nova Scotia (COTNS).
· Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, demonstrating strong communication, planning, and organizational skills.
· Previous experience in long-term care or geriatrics is an asset.
· Adaptability to changing resident needs and program requirements.
· Strong analytical and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
· Demonstrated expertise in dementia care, mobility, and seating assessments, as well as feeding and swallowing interventions.
· Proven commitment to professional development and evidence-based practice.
· Current and valid Vulnerable Sector Check.
