Type: Temporary Full Time Location: St. John's, NL
Start date: December 2, 2024 Starting Salary: $114,919.07 ($68.00/hour)

The Registered Nurses' Union Newfoundland & Labrador (RNU) is the official trade union for 5,800 registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) in Newfoundland and Labrador. Over the years, RNU has transformed from an organization focused mainly on negotiating contracts into a union that champions to protect the health care system, the role of the RN, NPs, and the rights of patients, clients and residents. Through advocacy research and education, RNU has worked to improve the healthcare system and enhance the livelihood, safety and well-being of our membership.

Job Description
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Staff Lawyer acts as a key member of the labour relations (LR) team and the RNUNL leadership team. Under the direction of the Executive Director, this position is responsible for the strategic and tactical execution of the RNUNL's Labour Relations strategy and operational plan. The Staff Lawyer advises on a wide range of complex labour relations issues, as well as contributing to designated LR practices across the organization. This position functions to deliver timely solutions that support the business and ensure an inclusive productive team in accordance with both company practices and RNU policies, as well as external employment legislation.

The incumbent is responsible for legally representing the organization or its members at court appeals or hearings or before administrative tribunals. The incumbent will be providing advice and guidance to the labour relations team for member employment issues and the administration of the applicable collective agreement to enable the organization to achieve its strategic and performance measurement objectives.
This role offers legal advice and guidance on labor relations, representing members in various meetings and grievance resolutions, and investigating employment-related complaints. The representative initiates communication with employers, coordinates accommodations related to human rights and worker's compensation, and participates in labor-related meetings. They also review and approve settlement agreements, authorize payments for external legal services, act as chief negotiator in collective bargaining, and consult with management on member services and contract issues.

Qualifications
•Completion of post-secondary education with a bachelor's Law degree.
•Member of, or eligible for membership in the Law Society of NL.
•Two years experience as a legal representative at court appeals and/or hearings representing a labour or other organization.
•Five years experience interpreting and applying the terms of a collective agreement, or other union related activity; or equivalent combination of experience and training.
•Experience presenting and advocating at mediations, dispute resolution and/or hearings before administrative tribunals.
