Job Description:

The Treasury and Balance Sheet Management (TBSM) department of TD Bank is responsible for measurement and management of interest rate risk for the domestic and foreign subsidiary retail bank product portfolios, transfer pricing those portfolios and reporting margins and Net Interest Income (NII).

The Pension and Retirement Investment Management team is responsible for supporting the fiduciary investment committees in overseeing the pension and retirement investment portfolios of over 20 defined benefit, defined contribution, and savings plans (with total assets of over $15 billion).

Job Description/Accountabilities:

  • Identify opportunities to innovate in the pension funds' ALM approach by integrating best practices in portfolio construction and risk management.

  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and monitoring of ALM framework and tools, ensuring alignment with TD DB pension plans' risk tolerance, funding objectives, and liabilities.

  • Develop long-term strategic asset allocation and risk mitigation strategies across Fixed Income and Return Seeking asset classes, by ensuring a balance between return generation, liquidity, and ALM risk management.

  • Plan and contribute to the implementation of monthly compliance monitoring, liquidity management and portfolio re-balancing strategies for Canadian DB plans.

  • Analyze, formulate, and present pension funding recommendations, taking into consideration current market conditions, investment strategies and impact to the bank's balance sheet.

  • Lead thematic research on emerging risks which may impact current plan investments or portfolio construction decisions.

  • Support preparation and review of presentation materials for the Fiduciary Committee or other senior audiences; provide analytical and operational support, ensuring timely responses to ad hoc requests from internal and external partners.

  • Act as subject matter expert in pension liability, funding and risk modelling methodologies and support the design, development and maintenance of performance monitoring and reporting tools.

  • Contribute to Regulatory compliance and Risk Management initiatives related to pension plans.

Specific Educational Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate university degree in a technical field such as Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, etc.

  • CFA and/or actuarial designation (FSA or FCIA) would be an asset.

Experience/Qualification/Skills:

  • 5+ years of experience in the financial field; experience in Asset Liability Management and/or the pension investment area is preferred.

  • Working knowledge of portfolio construction theories, portfolio management principles and financial markets.

  • Strong risk management capabilities, particularly in managing interest rate, credit, and liquidity risks.

  • Excellent quantitative skills and proficiency in portfolio management tools (e.g., Bloomberg, BlackRock Aladdin, etc.); experience with investment databases, eVestment, etc.

  • Analytical thinking: Ability to analyze complex financial and market data, as well as liability cash flows, to inform decision investment making.

  • Communication and presentation skills: clear and concise communicator, capable of simplifying complex investment or actuarial concepts for a broad audience and facilitate effective discussion on complex issues; experience in presenting to senior management, and investment committees would be considered an asset.

  • Proven track record of taking ownership of projects and manage/prioritize multiple competing priorities.

  • Self-starter that takes ownership with accountabilities with an ability to work with limited supervision; Dynamic and adaptable: comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where every day is different!
