Job Description:

Department Overview

The Office of Patentable Innovation (OPI) is part of TD Invent and has a mandate to work across the Enterprise to develop TD's patent portfolio with the objective of securing rights to our inventions, enabling freedom to operate and other means of value from the portfolio. Our team is responsible for reporting patent portfolio metrics to TD's Senior Executive Team and Board.

Job Description/Accountabilities

Reporting to the VP IP & Ideation, the Head of Patents will work with the members of the OPI, business partners, technology experts, industry IP experts, and innovation teams at both partner and competitive companies to establish strategic opportunities to leverage TD's existing patent assets and direct the capture of patentable innovations, including the underlying technologies that support the same.

Partnering with other members of the OPI Team, the incumbent will be working in an innovative and technical environment where they will be responsible for driving the company's intellectual property (IP) program, managing the patent pipeline, and ensuring the protection of our innovations. This role involves close collaboration with key stakeholders, working with each business at the enterprise level to establish purpose-built Patent and Innovation strategies that can maximize the value of TD's Innovation and Patent program.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Manage a team of business and technical subject matter experts

  • Oversee and provide direction and guidance to teams (both internal and external to TD Invent) who support OPI, including Legal, CAPA, and Marketing

  • Manage the development of business cases to support the core aspects of the patent strategy for the enterprise and LOBs: portfolio creation – both organically and via acquisition, freedom to operate, attraction and retention of innovators, culture of innovation and value extraction (including, but not limited to internal and external communication opportunities, full utilization of technologies related to the patent filings and partnership opportunities)

  • Facilitate the patent process through transparent engagement with stakeholders ensuring clear communication and documentation throughout.

  • Conduct technical and market assessments to support IP decision making.

  • Ensure the IP strategy is aligned with business objectives and emerging technologies.

  • Provide strategic guidance to ensure targeted capabilities are met.

  • Influence and present in front of senior level executives and board members

  • Identify opportunities and risks in the patent landscape

  • Support the VP IP & Ideation with developing and promoting both enterprise and LOB specific patent strategies that address the foregoing needs.

  • Establish KPIs and OKRs for measuring and assessing the success of such business cases through all stages of execution.

Other Qualifications/ Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years' experience in Business or Product management

  • 5+ years' experience in a startup or focused entrepreneurial experience

  • 5+ years' experience in technology & software development

  • 5+ years' experience in patent management

  • Proven ability to establish and execute large enterprise scale strategies and influence key senior executive stakeholders.

  • Proven ability to generate and obtain approval of new business opportunities.

  • Experience presenting to and working closely with senior leadership, group managers, and IP professional to develop patent business strategies

  • Ability to think strategically and articulate conclusions clearly.

  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to quickly understand new and complex issues and propose solutions.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Must have insights to the development process of IPs as it relates to the financial industry

Education Requirements

Science or technical undergraduate degree preferred, post graduate degree is an asset.
